Deer Dabo and company, please NO trick plays

Not sure why he thinks he needs to run trick plays. The last one that worked was the fake punt and then pass to Christian Wilkins against Oklahoma in Orange Bowl 2015. Just run the dang offense and we will be fine.

RB pass back to QB was perfectly timed and well executed.
Don't be a scrooge, let the kids play and have fun.

Would love to see them run that again and it go for 6, Cade almost took it to the house the last time.

The fake XP where we scored also worked very well. I guess the contractor did not watch the championship game or is clueless or both

That was Mafah's first special teams return all season, of any kind, against a unit trained specifically to strip balls and cause chaos, unlike your normal defense's mission that he normally preps for. That call was a coaching mistake more than a player mistake, IMO.

How are special teams guys anymore trained to strip the ball than normal defenders?

Angles, directions, coverage units and personnel, specialty coverage training, etc. There's a reason special teams is its own category.

From a Quora query about the type of special teams kicking options after a Safety. Good info on the rules and reasonings...
Gary McAdam NY Giants fan since 1984Author has 15.4K answers and 10.8M answer viewsUpdated Aug 29
After a safety is conceded, the conceding team have to free kick from their 20 yard line. They have three options for the free kick - punt, drop kick (not often used in the modern game) or placekick without a tee.
The last bit is important, as it means that any team wanting to restart the game that way would need to have one of the coverage team act as a holder for the kicker (which means one less player to get downfield to cover as soon as the kick occurs). A punt on the other hand frees up that 10th player for coverage duties.
The other main factor to consider is that whilst a place kick may go a bit further (10-15 yards usually), it does so without gaining a lot of height, so the return man can field the ball on the run, gain velocity and get further up field before the tacklers get to him. A punt by contrast trades some distance for hang time & control, allowing the tacklers to get further downfield before the return man can catch the ball and start his return (worth remembering that an average punt return in the pros covers about 8 yards per attempt, whereas a typical kickoff return covers around 20 yards, so that’s an extra 12 yards or so the receiving team has in field position advantage on their next possession).
The punter also gets to kick from hand with no pressure (unlike he would from a scrimmage play) and can aim his kick closer to one side of the field to further aid the tacklers on the coverage team. So in conclusion, it’s a tactical decision - they cannot retain possession after conceding a safety unless they attempt an onside kick (which is highly risky so close to their own end zone), so getting it as far downfield as they can is the only realistic option open to them. And a punt is the best way to achieve that.

So our 2nd team RB has not been trained to hold on to the ball?

Of course he's trained for that and practices with straight line defenses on his running and ball control, plus special possession drills and such. Special teams' coverage personnel are different though, especially on the free kick play where Mafah got the ball - the kicker plus 10 speedy coverage guys that like to hit, no linemen. Mafah, who had returned zero kicks or punts prior to that in live action, was put in unfamiliar territory on that play without necessity, and it cost us a huge chunk of momentum in the end. That far down the field Mafah normally has outrun the linemen, so with a couple of DB's in front, he's not used to another one just as fast running up behind. Sure he could've done better on the play and not fumbled, but putting a first-time returner in on a play like that is inviting chaos.
It wasn't a horrible call to run that play - a safety kick like that gives the punter all the time in the world to spot the ball, so the coverage team has a big advantage. The scrum action helped freeze and spread them out some. If someone with more touches in special teams prep and game action had been the recipient it may have worked out better. Or it might not've.
Go Tigers.

Madam only returned it to the 37. If Shipley had kept the ball he would have probably made it to the 30 so I wouldn’t say it worked.

Our offense has been extremely boring and predictable the last few years, and I think a few trick plays make it fun and exciting for the players.

Well, previous to Cade the majority of our plays were runs because we couldn’t consistently pass or run the other 80% of the playbook.

I have watched that kickoff return and replays from numerous angles and the only thing wrong is that running back just lost the ball. His arm was not hit nor the ball. Just extremely poor technique and running. This may have actually been the turning point of the game.

I like trick plays as long as they are a small part of the offense. It's the fundamental stuff that has to succeed in order for the tricks to surprise the other team. Worked perfectly against the Tarholes because the rest of the offensive plays were clicking.
