"All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies from the pit of hell...I don't believe the Earth's but about 9,000 years old." — Rep. Paul Broun, who serves on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.

Some people call themselves Bible-believers but think the planet is billions of years old.
Other Bible-believers think the planet is only a few thousand years old.

I believe the Bible literally, including the genealogies.

So I believe we can pinpoint fairly accurately how long ago God created the earth. But who's to say, when created it, he didn't create it aged?
I don't get hung up over the age of the earth, because that doesn't have much of anything to do with my faith. God creating the heavens and the earth has a lot to do with it, though.

Now it's clear why the term "young-earther" might not be correct for you, since you think that maybe the planet was created old (although I'm baffled at the concept).

I believe he created fully grown plant life. I don't think it's a big leap to think he created a generally "adult" planet. One of those things I can't claim to know until I get to heaven.

# who actually believe the Bible literally is probably less than the # who would claim to believe the Bible literally.
That's one of those things people like to say without being fully aware of what it entails.

Yup. Or they disagree about what it entails. (Many think that Genesis can be read to allow for millions of years of evolution.)

standpoint, is that evolution throws the ideas of original sin and death entering the world through sin, out of whack.
Evolution requires pain, death, and suffering in the absence of sin, since man didn't show up until later.

turning the water into wine at the wedding feast. It wasn't wine in a box either. It was the good stuff that had been aged.
Jesus took water, and not only made it into wine, he made it into find, AGED wine.
Stands to reason, that God himself could make a rock "old".
What is "time" to God?

If you want to question abiogenesis or the big bang theory, that's fine; they are as scrutinized and debatable as anything you will find among the sciences. "Lies straight from Hell" might be a bit harsh, particularly from someone who sits on the US House science committee.
However, for a trained gynecologist to suggest that embryology is a lie designed by Satan to send people to Hell is a level of insanity that surpasses fellow science committee member Todd Akin's own staggering height of ignorance. I guess it's not enough that we have concrete evidence of the entire process of embyrology from pre-conception to the trip through the birth canal; either this congressman was shamelessly pandering to uneducated constituents, or he went to medical school in the 1800's. Evolution is proven fact as well; don't believe in it? Lovely, don't feel obliged to get that flu vaccine every year.
Is it too much to ask for those elected to oversee the direction and funding of the sciences in the US actually understand and acknowledge our modern scientific understanding? Belief in your religion is great, but when your beliefs automatically discredit geology, anthropology, archaeology, biology, medicine, pathology, pharmacology, astronomy, chemistry, physics, and virtually every other field of science, perhaps you should recuse yourself from national science leadership roles.
Is that too much to ask?
