Neff was impressive this morning on wccp...

Mar 25, 2022, 9:04 AM

He said the expectation after continuing to invest in the basketball program is to make the NCAAT about every season, win the first ACCT, and potentially to compete for Final Fours.

Sounds like he is 100 percent behind Coach Brownell, and he will have to live up to Neff's expectations in the short term, and long term.

I'm sure wccpfm.com will have the pod cast up later from the 8AM hour later today.

I agree. It was good to hear him say that he has high expectations and wants to see Clemson win an ACC championship in basketball. Brad has a lot of work to do but at least he understands what Neff wants. Hopefully he can get it done!

Give us something to go see, Neff - other than 6 dudes on the court, taking out our best guy with the game on the line, calling time out to let the other team get all their shooters in before the last play.

Give us a coach that has a team that has won TWO WHOLE GAMES in a single ACC Tourney TWICE in the history of the stupid thing.

Give us something to go see that gives us HOPE we MAY win the ACC Tourney as the ONLY founding member of the ACC that hasn't done it. And there aren't many members of the ACC that HAVEN'T won the tourney, other than us.

2) the definition of Insanity "doing the Same thing over & over expecting a different result"
So what's different in Year 13 for Brownell?
Furthermore what's the difference of fans being on campus and Brownell's coaching?
So a year from now what's gonna be different?

I'll look for the podcast. From the cliff notes you laid out it sounds like the right stuff. But I'd still like to see a more positive approach like Dabo takes. He said from the get - why not us in meaning winning a natty.

I don't think it's unrealistic to say we expect to be in the tournament every year. We expect to win the ACC. Not just compete. Too open ended. But I'll wait for the podcast.

In one sentence you want CBB/Neff to say why not us in terms of winning the natty and in the next sentence you think it unrealistic to be in the tournament every year. Had either said anything about winning the natty the T-net braintrust would have gone into orbit as that is about as silly as some of the things the coot football coaches spew to their delusional fans.

FWIW there is no chance we will win the natty in Basketball regardless of the investment we provide. I guess we might could win it if Tates Locke were given free rein to recruit and did not get caught for a few years.

The best example is coot football which is a good historical comparison to Clemson basketball. The coots have invested heavily on their football facilities but have zero to show for it. They have really nice everything to offer recruits but it has not made a difference.

Improving our program with investment would no doubt yield some improvement like perhaps making the Dance or NIT most years but the likelihood of our climbing out of the historical hole to win a natty is astronomically small. Probably not zero percent but very close.

Being realistic does not make anyone a bad fan. Folks like yourself who have no awareness of the low stature of our program and constantly complain about the coach hurts the program so yes it makes you a bad fan.

the NCAA Tourney takes 64 teams and the NIT takes 32. That's 96 teams in post season play. Can you honestly say, with a straight face, that we shouldn't at least be considered one of the top 100 teams in the country?

That's kinda like a football team not even making a crappy bowl, and they take most anybody with a .500 record.

How many of the spots are locked in to lesser conference champions? How many of the NIT spots are given to broaden the field instead of to the top teams. Perhaps do a little research before posting?

You have to at least say those are your goals as far as competing for National Championships. You might not ever reach those goals, but reach for the top as Dabo believes in. That is one of the main things fans have a problem with Brad. He has no vision for the program, or at least does not give them out to the public or media. Oliver Purnell used to say he wanted to win a National Championship. Now, was he going to a accomplish that, no question no way, but you aren't going to be successful at all unless you reach for the highest goals.

Fans like you would call him delusional (maybe you should) if he stated we should compete or win a national championship. We make fun of coot fans who ask "why not us"? There is nothing about our program which strives to win a national championship. We dont fund this type of program or have the right type of coaches and frankly the fans dont show the support required to get anywhere near a natty.

Mar 25, 2022, 1:04 PM [ in reply to Re: Unless I'm wrong, and many times I probably am..... ]

to understand what a Top 100 Team means. Hel1, as a young teen, I listened on a transistor radio to the Gamecocks when they had Roche, Ribock, Riker & Owens. Somewhere in a closet I probably have the Sports Illustrated where they were on the cover as the #1 team in the nation. I went to Furman games in the old Greenville Memorial Auditorium in the early 70s when they had Clyde Mayes, Fessor Leonard Leonard and Russ Hunt. They were giant killers that knocked off big name teams, and were nationally ranked.

I hesitate to use the this phrase - but I've forgotten more about college basketball than you'll ever know.

from what I saw posted on here a few weeks back. A decent gameday coach wouldn't have that roster sitting at home as often as Brad does considering how many spots are available between the NCAA and NIT. No amount of money or toys or shiny objects is going to improve Brad's abilities here unfortunately - it is what it is.

I will never understand the defeatist mentality of the Brownell pumpers and basketball doomslangers. I sure hope I don't ever get infected with that.

Our Athletic Department has thrived for decades after decades without the basketball team winning the ACC Tournament and it will continue to survive.

Re: Neff was impressive this morning on wccp...

Mar 25, 2022, 10:15 AM

Brownells problem is that 1) He and his staff are average high school recruiters with low expectations - had no shot with John Butler and is getting no consideration from his brother - and they live in Greenville 2) He does not manage the end of games well and thus loses a very high number of close games. I am not convinced that he has a game plan in every game either. This game is about matchups and substitutions and there are points in the season where he looks like he is just making it up as he goes or coaching off "feel". Cant do that in the ACC - especially when most teams are more talented than you.

Neff better realize very quickly he has a job to do and do it. This is the real world and results matter.

Wondering what CBB is suppose to sell to recruits?

Chance to compete for championships? Nope
Putting guys in the NBA? Nope
Program history of excellence? Nope
Great facilities? Ok but no better than Mid Major programs
Offers NIL for basketball recruits? Nope
Has shoe companies who pay recruits to attend Clemson like they did Zion to Duke? Nope

So you are disappointed that CBB cant land 5* talent for the lone reason the player grew up in Greenville? Perhaps we should look at reasons to enhance what Clemson has to offer instead of thinking CBB should be some sort of super recruiter with his hands tied behind his back.

Terry Don said very similar things about the program expectations as well when he came on board too.

After all, what else would he say? Those are the talking points for all new AD's. Dan may have said the same thing too.

Good interview and he is very impressive.

Question: do you "fans" think Neff is a lunatic since he basically agrees exactly with what myself and others have been saying for the last few months?

Can you link your post where you detailed the investment needed to improve the program and that you supported CBB giving him a chance to show what he can do with support from the AD and fans?

by your logic Clemson basketball is doomed to never be any good. How in the hell can you then say the fans need to be better and show support for a program that you yourself say is never going to be ####?

Your reading comprehension needs work as I never said anything of the sort.

Talk is cheap. I hope but doubt Neff will do any better with managing the basketball program.

I thought it was kinda meh...didn't really say much, but wasn't terrible either.

He said "from the chair I sit in" after "moving offices down the hall" about 15 times.

Not much substance, but glad he was willing to speak on the local show to Clemson nation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep.

Overall I think he’s okay.

But hopefully as he gains more experience “in that chair he sits in” he will get away from all the empty corporate buzzword speak.

I’ll give it a listen but I can tell you there’s a large group

Mar 25, 2022, 12:07 PM

of iptay donors that won’t be willing to donate to extra fundraising while brownell is the coach. They’re ready for him to go. Neff will still probably get donations from some, but if he’s expecting all previous major donors to buy in, then he’s going to be really disappointed. Fundraising will get easier and more lucrative after there’s a new sheriff in town.

Interesting points. Yes, I think you could be right. Think it all came down to Neff couldn't not let Brad go in his first year as top AD. I think Neff has his doubts that Brad will be successful or not next season. I expect unless Clemson really improves a lot, the idea is to look for a new coach next season and then can try to attract donors.

as long as CBB is the coach, I have purchased season basketball tickets for the last time and attended my last game.

I used to try to attend 2 or 3 basketball games each season. Nor any more. Besides letters and e-mails, which only receive lip service, the only things that will get the Administrations's attention are declining ticket sales and attendance. Losing ACC seasons and not making post-season play are largely ignored.

I was watching Brownell ball for 3-4 years with my 12-13 year old son (9-10 yrs ago) when my son said Clemson was the most boring basketball team he had ever seen. I had no argument for him. The team(s) shot poorly, walked it up the court, and routinely turned it over in the clutch. In other words, what used to be an exciting game day experience had become a buzz kill. It was time to move on. We still enjoy football and soccer games based on the team & coaching efforts and the skill levels.

I did not hear this podcast, but if his expectations are to make the NCAAT every season and to compete for the final four, then he is, IMO, delusional.
Not even Virginia makes the Big Dance every year. In fact if recent memory serves me only Duke and UNC have that type of program that can get there almost every year.
Rather , I would have preferred to hear more of the approach of competing for the ACC regular season title + achieving a 20 win season, then making strides in the ACC Tournament.
Those type of results, IMO, would lead to more NCAAT appearances, none of which will occur when you continually finish in the bottom half of the ACC or fail to win 20 games.
Now if that is being 100 % behind Coach Brownell, we will be talking about making the NIT again next year.
Oh wait we didn't make the NIT ,did we?

Virgnia and Florida State have pretty much been making the NCAAT every year before this season. Both had very off seasons but both are bringing very good recruiting classes next season with some very young pieces coming back next season.

I think when Neff says that he means like 3 NCAATa in about a 5 year period which is pretty obtainable.

Doubtful. Very doubtful. Do any of us believe he is any smarter than his predecessors? Do you think that Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Gonzaga, etc. know about NIL? Wake up. Nothing is going to change until Brownell is gone and the BOT decides to pony up to hire and retain a truly competent coach who can both recruit and coach.

And then the BOT will need to fix a very bad baseball program. Monte probably has at least two more year. Sad.

I think he will bring in some energy and youthfulness to the position. He will provide the tools and resources for Brownell to be meet those goals and if he does not then he will be out. It's pretty much cut and dry but with a fresh set of eyes looking at it.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Re: Neff was impressive this morning on wccp...

Mar 25, 2022, 3:21 PM

No matter how sincere. Paragraph 2 is irreconcilable with Paragraph 1. So what he is doing is a waste of time, money, and energy. Brownell has had 12 years to demand then implement a vision. A slightly more compliant AD doesn’t change that. And the (inevitable) next coach will not want the same investments Brownell wanted rendering them a waste.
