I think the key to the whole thing is ND

Only hope for ACC is ND joining As soon as they go somewhere else, game over. As soon as the first acc school goes, game over.
Only chance for acc is ND joining and tv contract renegotiated. They get to decide what the end game looks like, as long as they move before an acc school jumps ship.

Whether the game happens or not is insignificant
May 18, 2012, 3:13 PM
[ in reply to that bowl probably will never happen*** ] |
|
What is significant about it, is that it is a public portrayal that the ACC is officially irrelevant in collegiate football, in the same way that the Big East is. Had this announcement been the BigXII and ACC, or SEC and ACC.. it would lean towards some saving grace for the ACC. That did not happen. Notre Dame, and any other football oriented school will not come near the ACC with a 10 foot pole now, unless it is a unionized effort.

Exactly. The end game for the ACC has occurred, whether Swofford, anyone in Chapel Hill and Durham, or anyone on this board has realized it. The ACC is finished and Clemson needs to sprint to the Big XII.

who hasn't been a relevant football power since Lou Holtzschsacperrt was the head coach? Honestly they'd just partner up with UNC and Duke to make the Tobacco road mafia into some sort of hellish triumvirate anyway.

I just have a hard time seeing ND align themselves with Bama, LSU, Florida, etc. They've dodged those schools for years on the gridiron. A bad cultural fit, IMO.

They're basically a B1G school already, I think that's the logical place for them to end up in all sports (they'll pull the non-football sports out of the dying embers of the Big East)

Call me crazy, but I actually think the Big 12 is best fit.
May 18, 2012, 2:25 PM

Think about it - when discussing the importance of their football independence, ND has always cited the importance of playing a "national schedule."
Suppose FSU joins the Big 12. If ND joined, they would play games in Texas and Florida (attractive for obvious reasons), the midwest and mid-Atlantic. Throw in OOC games against USC, Navy, Air Force, Michigan, etc. and that's as national a schedule as you can get. The Big 12 also has established a precedent for allowing a school to have huge Tier 3 rights, too.

I was mostly basing it on the fact that they play at least 3 B1G teams just about every year (next year is Mich, Mich St, and Purdue).

Do you even know who is in the BIG 12? Do you think ND would be caught dead with Baylor, TCU, Kansas or WVU? No way. ND will never join B10. They still hate each other. ND's only choice is ACC, and the conference has been making moves to make that happen. Pull your head out of your butt.

Ok, then. Keep holding your breath for ND to join the ACC. Speaking of pulling one's head out of their butt...how about you brush up on current events?
Yeah, it's ridiculous to think that ND would want to be part of a conference with 3 of the biggest football powers of all time, with an opportunity to play in the most talent-rich states in the country, all while maintaining their 3rd tier TV rights. It's much more likely that they would join a fledgling, basketball-first league with no presence or following anywhere outside of the east coast.

Speaking of current events.... The Big 12 is sooooo awesome four of their members decided to leave the conference because they couldn't handle all the awesomeness of playing in Waco, TX and Ames, IA!!!!!

The first thing to wound it was a bad TV negotiation by the ACC that gave up tier 3 rights.
The announcement today sucked out the last breath.

Which they won't anyway because of the money they would be leaving on the table by joining a conference with no seat at the table for the pool of $$$$ that is going to be available to the big time conferences. Not to mention virtually no chance, if at all, at ever seeing a national champ game.

you're wrong. There's no way a 1-loss Clemson beats out a 1-loss OK State or a 1-loss Stanford last year (or a 1-loss Alabama for that matter). We would've had to have gone undefeated, and even then there would've been naysayers because we play in the ACC.
