So pubs have run two moderates in a row (and yes,

libs, by typical Pub standards, they were moderates).
The approach has flopped.
In this most recent election Romney basically created Obamacare, had no desires to touch Social Security, and for the most part didn't even bring up the traditional red meat conservative social issues.
Still lost.
I'm not quite sure what the answer is for Pubs....I think a more traditional conservative candidate (not that there were any to choose from this past time) would have lost worse. It really seems like people care more about the candidates jersey than any discussion points, and right now the Dems are the Pittsburgh Steelers of the political world...more people like em than not.
Just thinking out loud here....short of Joe Biden being the Dem nominee in 2016, I think it'll take a major cultural shift for Pubs to not find themselves in the same situation as last night......needing EVERYTHING to go perfectly to get the electoral college.

worse. I'm not obtuse enough to be chanting "We needs a troo conservative!". I thought that was the answer to McCain...I don't think it was even close to the answer last night.

If saying dumb sh## mattered, Obama would have lost in a landslide due to people being terrified about Biden being next in line.

in 2016, and the Dems will be on the offensive to find a new star. Depending on what happens over the next four years, I warn the GOP if they think Paul Ryan is that guy, then good luck. Anyone with a pulse could see this year's GOP field was flawed.

giving themselves raises every 4 years, and you knew it would ultimately bankrupt GHS, but not in your lifetime, you'd probably find more people than not being all for it.
I think we're in that situation as an electorate.

How was Mitt Romney's platform moderate in any way. He was to the right of Bush in virtually every way.

divide. As long as the Dems racial (primarily) and gender (secondary) divide carries votes the Republicans will suffer.
But in the end, people want stuff and will vote for whoever promises them the most. Actually getting what was promised really doesn't matter.

differentiate between moderate and pragmatic. Can you live with governance over ideology? What is "fiscal conservatism" to you (and the GOP)? Do you really believe in supply-side economics? Really?
The nation was wide open for some change, and a really strong leader could not only have taken the WH from the dems, but may well have driven a change in the Senate as well.
Two ways nations change. Evolution, or revolution. Revolution is only good if your side wins, and it's still painful. Evolution can be shaped and guided, but only through wisdom, not impatience.

a different society than we were a decade ago......social media and instantaneous news cycles mean groupthink and kneejerk opinions are the norm nowadays, not the exception. Right now more people are dems, and I think it's just as much that they think it's stodgy and antiquated to be a Republican than it is any real ideological reason to be a Dem.
Are there Pubs who are Pubs for the same pitiful reason? Sure, but I don't think the tide is in their favor.
Bottom line, I really think we're unfortunately past laying out agendas and ideologies and winning people over. It's about marketing, and our advertising agency is getting it's ### kicked.

think you have a good point. They alienate alot of folks with all that religious babble and intrusion into people's personal lives while at the same time trying to tout themselves as the "small govn't" people that don't want to bother you. It is kinda hypocritical.
