The Sloans sold the business to former Clemson defensive lineman (played in the mid-60s) Mac McElmurray. Mac would come into The Bookstore when I was working there for a happy hour beer every day and we got to be good friends. When Jimmy Lanford decided to close the Bookstore, Mac offered me a job with him at Sloan's. It lasted a little less than a year because Mac could not compete with Judge Keller, Coach Ibrahim, and Knickerbockers. We had a nice little run after the 81 Natty because Mac and I came up with some great Natty t-shirt designs, I think I wore one of our shirts every day around campus for almost a month as a walking billboard, LOL.
Several years later I rented one of the basement rooms on the lake from Mrs. Sloan on Strawberry Lane. I had a sliding glass door that was about 10 steps from the dock. I lived in a lot of places in my years in Clemson, and that one was a stellar accommodation. Mrs. Sloan was a very sweet lady.
Dang you scooter for sending me so far down Memory Lane this morning, LOL!

Worked in a lot of bars, some made it longer than others. Worked in a lot of other places, some closed, some were summer gigs, and some were left for more lucrative opportunities. I literally took a pay cut for my first job after graduation because I knew if I didn't get out of Clemson I'd end up as a 40-year-old bartender. My very first job back in Rock Hill after graduation...bartender.

when we were in town one weekend back when the basketball team hosted the IPTAY tournament at the beginning of basketball season every year. Also, went to Lester's a few times before it closed but that wasn't one of the regular haunts after I started as a student. It was more of a locals watering hole with an older crowd.

At the time, TTT was half its present size. The Tiger Bite Site was next door and when it closed, Bite Site was absorbed to double the size of Tiger Town. Wednesday night happy hour at the Bite Site caused me to miss a few Thursday morning classes with 10-cent draft, 25-cent longnecks, and 50-cent well drinks from 7-9. We called it Dollar Vomit Night because you could almost get THAT drunk on a one-dollar bill. Worse...if you were still upright at 9:00, you certainly weren't going home.

1973-74, the had a min 10 gal purchase so people would not 'top off' as there were shortages. I had an MG with a 7.5 gal tank. LOL.
Gas had it over $1 for the first time ever.
I think they rationed also based on tag number, evens vs odds on which days you could buy gas.

in that same condition today, are worth $100K to $200K. Even the Vega is worth money, and it was worthless the day it was bought.
If there was a Grand P.Ricks in the photo, odds are it was Colon's, Stan's, Skip's or Tree's. They had identical ones. The NCAA, didnt need to investigate: just stand on a street corner and watch them drive by. Crazy.

Maybe the other three were Grand Priicks, since those three came in together. Yes, saw them at Harcombe. A few of us ate there on weekends, and one day we were looking out the window, and all four of them came out of the dorm, got into their cars and drove off. Nobody said anything for about 10 seconds. Then John Allen (tmail me if you see this) said, "The NCAA is gonna kill us." They did.

You're probably as much an addict to BringATrailer as I am. I haven't looked recently, but good Vegas, if there is such a thing, had been going for 10-ish, which is not a lot, but considering the POS that car is, I consider that money. People who like them (I can't imagine) sometimes do a V8 swap, and those were going for more.

I was probably one of the most prolific commenters and submitters there. Really got turned off when they totally monetized what an all-volunteer base of extreme enthusiasts had built up. There's nothing they've done that isn't their right to do, but as a lifelong car hobbyist, I think they've played the biggest role in sending the hobby down the drain and taking it from the hands of enthusiasts and putting it into the hands of speculators and trust funders who are barely interested in cars.
They're one of the sole reasons a normal Joe can't buy an e30 M3 or air cooled 911 anymore or any other plethora of cars I could list.

You're exactly right. My 'car I wish I had back' was an '87 e28. What a fun car to drive. I cannot even tell you today why I let it go. Stupidity, I think. Would have needed paint by now, but really should have kept it. I have looked at BAT, and to get one nice enough to own you're looking at real money, and most of that increase has been in the last few years. I have been thinking about dropping down, considering an E21. They don't give those away either, but the price is sort of reasonable. The E30s are maybe better cars than the 21, but somehow I got fixated on the styling of the 21 and 28, mostly that front end. A white E 21 for weekends: would be fun.
You have a 'wish I had it back'?

Might take a couple posts since you can only attach 3.
For you, here's the two different 535is's I had. Black one was mint and sold it, Red one was a great condition project and got totaled.
White 2002 was a ton of fun too and was restored. Sold it to some young record producer who daily drove it. I'd see it sitting on music row in the rain and it was instant regret for selling it to him.

Two of these are sentimental favorites because my kids came home from the hospital in them. The wagon was sweet...sports package and one of like 1000 they brought over with a manual transmission. Should have kept. Rover was beautiful, smooth, and character galore, but reliability was no bueno.
As for the D90, it's one of my top 2 "should have kepts". Just wasn't practical when my son was born and I sold it for an absolute song. Last time I tracked it, it was for sale in Denver for about 3.5x what I sold it for.

The one I really should have kept though is the F40.
HAH. kidding. This belongs to a friend of a friend in Denver. Just happened to come across it looking thru car pics.
No, the winner of "should have kept", that I can't find a pic of right now, was my 1987 VW GTi 16v that I bought in 1990 with 28k miles and drove through college. It was a blast to drive, really spurred my love of "sporty" cars, and I have more good memories centered around that car than anything else I've ever owned, car or otherwise.

Ha, totally bought it at first. Was like, dang, bro.
You have quite a collection of great memories. I have heard the same about the Range Rover: nothing better while running. The 535 was a hot car. Would be good to have that back. Mine was a 528, Navy with beige. And yes, I have heard that the GTI is a blast. But man, the 2002 is gorgeous. I hope someone is taking care of it now.
Again, I might someday soon look for an e 21. My luck, I would end up as an episode on Hoovie's Garage.
