Pay raise

Been with new company for 5 years now. So I just earned an additional 24 hours of PTO per year.

When I hired in we would get 264 hours.

Then we had a merger and they sucked off 40 hours (224 per year).

Now I got a bump for 5 yrs service = 248 hours.

6 weeks vacation time is not too shabby.

I've been with my company 10 years cumulative, like 4 the first time and 6 this time around.

I think we started with 16 days vacation and it moved to 21 days vacation at 5 years.

Butttt, they changed everyone above a certain level to "UNLIMITED" PTO and so I can theoretically take time off whenever I want.

Correct. Can't agree enough.

I have heard that "unlimited PTO" generally reduces the amt of time off.

Like if you get 6 weeks, you take 6 weeks. But if it's unlimited, most of the time people take off less.

I'm sure there are exceptions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My old company went to unlimited - most people did not use all their PTO

2

and banked the max you can bank, which I do not remember what that was.

I argued that employees who had worked there already, would have no problem with unlimited, but new employees might not know how much time to take off. They had to monitor it just to be sure employees DID take time off.

As far as I know, it has worked out ok.

I think, for the most part, it does for our company. I'm not sure I fall in

that category though. I take my time off when I can. Sometimes I work a little from vacation, but I used to do that before the Unlimited PTO as well, just to make sure things get done while I am out.

ringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My last company went to that and announced it on a random Tuesday

as a huge benefit for everyone, going in to effect the next day, like it was some big emergency. Two weeks later they laid off about 700 people. The reality was they didn't want to pay out PTO for those folks who had earned a lot and banked it.

I guess folks started actually using their newfound unlimited time off, because a few weeks later HR sent out a clarifying email that we would still have to track our PTO online, and to please not take more than 3 weeks off.

When we got bought I had earned 6 weeks off a year, then got unlimited PTO, but essentially got 3 weeks off taken away from me, with no pay out of unused PTO if I was fired.

Man that company sucks.

Fortunately, I haven't had any side-eye with it. But, I've been here 11 years and usually only take about 3 weeks of PTO when it's consecutive days (as opposed to being out for a sick kid). But I'm also fully remote, and my work is flexible with when it's done (so I can bill 4 hours from 9PM-1AM if I need). So...I don't really declare PTO unless it's a legit vacation.

That still seems pretty solid. Do you also get holidays off or is PTO the only way to take days off? I get like 28 days of PTO a year but then also get like 12 paid holidays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My post was not entirely clear, but PTO included holidays

1

Aug 7, 2025, 9:06 AM

PTO was meant to say all paid time off. So that's 248/8 = 31 days per year.

My old company started at 200 = 25 days
After 5 years it went to 240 = 30 days

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With that math, I'm at 208 and will jump to 248 next year.

I'm already pretty happy here and that 4th week will make it so if everything else holds steady I won't even think of applying and interviewing for new jobs. If somebody wanted me, they'd have to jump through the hoops.

I don't get any level of sick time, but I'm also not harassed about time for appointments.

Depends on the line of work. There are plenty where people bounce due to bad management; I've even seen people do it for a pay cut or a place where cost of living is higher.

Hell, I moved to a place where my dollar didn't stretch as far for a new job paying about the same because of very bad management.

I didn't much care for phase one, which to my understanding went ahead and lowered the tax on the high earners then said the state would lower income taxes if certain revenue targets were hit. My unstudied barstool opinion on that is those targets would never be hit. But also this goes too far into wrong board territory, so I'll quit.

Reminds me a my first job.

I had been there for 5 years, and they changed the vacation policy. I was bumped to 3 weeks, plus a week sick time.

I made the comment...so if I save my vacation and sick days until the end of the year, and they renew in January, tie in the holidays...I could probably take off from Thanksgiving until February.

The owner said, you probably could. But if I realize that I can do without you for 2 months...I'd probably realize I could do without you.

That's stuck with me.
