Would an Alliance be good for Clemson?

Aug 17, 2021, 10:09 PM

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of the ACC joining an alliance. Schoolyard playground-style! lol.

Schedules would be WAY better. I have tickets to a few games this year and the top game...Boston College. Not the coolest name in CFB.

Maybe even make it a huge battle of networks...The Alliance and FOX versus SEC and ESPN?

Just give me Clemson vs USC or Clemson vs Penn St. I'd love that!

With the SEC expanding, and possibly moving to a 9 game schedule

I'm looking to see if future games vs SEC does will start to get cancelled. I think Uof SC will still play us every year, but we have future home and homes with Georgia and LSU. It wouldn't surprise me of one or both cancel saying they have to many conference games. So yes we need to look for replacements and possibly this alliance will help with that. I'd love to see home and homes with Oklahoma State, Kansas State, the REAL USC, Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Penn State, UCLA, WASHINGTON, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.

We have games scheduled with Oklahoma too

After we've hung a, oh let's say 12-peat, on the UofSUC I'm not so sure they won't try to get us off their schedule...

I have read nothing so far as to an alliance with the Big 10 and PAC 12 meaning we play games with them or so on. While I admit seeing a Clemson USC( the real USC) or a Penn State the main purpose of the Alliance,as I have read would be to keep the SEC from having the power to legislate polices that would favor the SEC or to give them a monopoly on favorable bowl games sites.

Leftie, nobody knows for sure what it will mean, but interconference games are certainly being discussed by the media.

And like I said I have read nothing so far, but the last time I checked the media doesn't decide games.

That is true in the regular season.. not so in the cfp***

I think at the very least, it won't be bad

An alliance would allow for a couple things:

- Marquee games, some against teams we've never played or haven't played in decades
- Recruiting inroads into the midwest and west coast
- Better bowl ties
- All 3 conferences can move the SEC off their schedules, effectively cutting them off from quality opponents

There's not a whole lot of other power moves available, unless the moneymaker teams from two conferences decide to leave the weaker teams behind and form a new conference. An ACC-B1G merger of the top 16 football teams would be something to sit up and take notice of, for instance. But I don't see that ever happening.

Re: Would an Alliance be good for Clemson?

It could be.

I do not like the SEC. I did not like that league in the 50s, 60s and 70s because the schools were mostly terrible educational institutions and they all cheated on a wholesale basis. I do not like the conceit of that league in the present day. All the talk about SEC SPEED and SEC TOP TO BOTTOM STRENGTH seem largely bogus. (Who have Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Miss State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt beaten in the last few decades?) I don't like it that South Carolina fans automatically see themselves as winners when Bama or Florida win a title. The idea of being a fan of a league seems incestuous to me. The very recent clandestine SEC dealing Texas and Oklahoma while pushing the other leagues toward a 12 team playoff was transparently self serving and dishonest. The fact that while the 12 team playoff concept was being discussed, the SEC was in bed with ESPN, illustrates the worst about those two entities.

The main purpose of the alliance proposal is thwart the self serving SEC. If the SEC continues to act as if they wish to go it alone, I would be perfectly happy for the Alliance Leagues plus Big12, Notre Dame and the Group of 5 teams to unilaterally announce none of their members will play SEC teams. Then the larger part of college football could construct a free standing Natty for their members and get a free standing TV/Streaming broadcast contract that excludes the SEC. Let's see how the SEC fares if they only play themselves and they unilaterally try to claim their conference champ as the national champ.

Yes, I'd be willing to give up our annual game with South Carolina if necessary to push the SEC to keep the sport a national sport rather than just a regional one.

I like this idea. Not that I think it has a chance of happening, but I like it. I too would be willing to forgo the annual chicken kicking if it isolated the SEC & ESPN.

Re: Would an Alliance be good for Clemson?

The Alliance would certainly produce some nice intersectional games. Play one BIG team each year and one Pac 12 game. Great for fans as well. I had a blast attending the game at Cal over Labor day 2019 with fellow UNC fans. Great mini vacation staying in SF; attending the game in Berkeley and then touring Napa.

My question is can you eventually see the ACC schools going "all in" and eliminating their annual games with UGA, UF, UofSC and UK and replacing them with Alliance games? You may need to in order to have 7 home games.

How would Clemson fans feel about that?

Re: Would an Alliance be good for Clemson?

Oh, I agree there would be some nice games...I'd love to play a BIG/PAC game every year. And I think there would be national interest in those games.

But on the other hand would, say, Wake Forest vs. Purdue create any buzz nationally?

And really what it comes down to is money. If an alliance is going to successfully counter the SEC's moves, it's got to produce enough revenue to keep everybody on a level, or close to it, playing field financially.

That's why I'm skeptical that an alliance would help much, although admittedly I haven't studied the details of what's being discussed. The BIG is already, I think, close to the SEC revenue wise. I don't see them offering to spread their money around. Whatever happens, it's got to produce more money for the ACC/PAC and everybody else...probably having to include Notre Dame...while not reducing BIG revenue.

That's also why I like the idea of NOT playing the SEC. That isolates them and reduces, I think, their revenue potential, while possibly increasing that of others. It's a counterweight with some real heft.

But...again...I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Would an Alliance be good for Clemson?

Not going to speak on WF games, but an alliance could enhance scheduling not just for the top couple of teams as far as TV attractiveness goes. I mean, would one rather watch VT/East Carolina or VT/Michigan State, for example?

It would greatly enhance the middle tier OOC games for each conference.

And the networks would be willing to pay way more for say, UNC versus Iowa than they would UNC/Georgia State that is on the schedule this year.

I'm kind of coming around to the idea if they can make this work. VT already has Maryland, Rutgers, Wisconsin, and Arizona on future schedules anyway.

Re: Would an Alliance be good for Clemson?

Aug 18, 2021, 4:08 PM

I'd watch VT vs. Michigan State and UNC vs. Iowa. I might have a hard time rooting for UNC though!

But seriously, I hope something does work out. I just wonder about details.

For one, is the BIG really interested given they are in a position of relative strength money wise? They're going to want...and should get...more out of it.

And we'd probably all have to do away with scheduling the SC States, Old Dominions etc. Which I'm ok with, but I also understand coaches who might want a tune-up game or one to get the bench some playing time.

Bottom line to me is we're (everybody in the ACC) going to have to get a big boost in revenue...and maybe have to take some pie away from the SEC too...to stay in this thing long term. I'm just not sure an alliance will suffice.
