Mangey: Moar Dabo talk

20

Oct 24, 2023, 10:01 AM

I was thinking about this on my drive yesterday...Jim Harbaugh turned over his coaching staff after Covid, I'm pretty sure. Hired something like 6 new assistants after they got stoned to a 2-4 record that year. And that was the Covid year...kind of crazy.

I know there's a lot of Harbaugh haters...rightfully so...but I like the guy and I'd love to play for him.

But my point being...look at the success Michigan has had since. Pretty undeniable.

The reason I bring this up is I think, regardless of his resume, if Dabo doesn't make some more changes this off-season, the noise will be unbearable. Simple because I don't see this same staff turning us around.

So, to sound like a broken record, either he makes some changes or he doesn't. Need to see what happens here first.

But to game this conversation a little bit, if he doesn't, good lort I don't see next year being fun and I see the fanbase really cranking up the dial (which he clearly has a hard time dealing with).

Let's say Dabo is over it here and needs a change. Where would he go?

Do you think some of the bigger programs would make him an offer? Or do you think he'd just retire?

He's still pretty young, as far as coaches go, right? 53? He's got at least 10 more years of solid coaching left in him, if not more.

A lot of Clemson fans are undoubtedly personally attached to Dabo. The aw-shucks good Christian vibe sticks here about as good as Obama in Bankhead. Just reality.

Those of us who look at this situation objectively, from both a results on the field and a financial perspective, are starting to significantly taper expectations. And at that point, we don't need to pay the man $11M to do what someone making $5M can do...just saying. ESPECIALLY if we're already running at a significant financial deficit to other schools in the region due to the ACC TV deal.

I guess at the end of the day, it comes down to what the BOT and AD are saying / thinking as well. Like, hey man, we're paying you #3 coach salary in the country and we're not a top 50 team. Your hires have been garbage. You got X years to fix this or we will have to start talking exit strategy.

Any executive in the private sector yielding the same results and downward YoY trajectory as Dabo over the past 3 years would certainly have this conversation with his board, if he wasn't already shown the door.

The only thing I envy about his position is his paycheck. His entire ethos is just getting wrekt and he has to do some serious soul searching to change his paradigm to right this. The significance of this change to him, personally, is what causes me to have such cynicism regarding his ability to fix it.

to lighten the mood:

Bottom line is Dabo is only as good as his assistants

3

Oct 24, 2023, 10:05 AM

He is a great CEO, but he needs a great staff. Look at it before Morris, before Venables and now after Venables and Scott/Elliott.

I don't want him gone. I think he is a genuinely good guy and a good leader, but he needs to clean house and go after the best coaches money can buy or this slide will continue.

Maybe we could gat Jimbo or even Lincoln Riley?***

it's crazy how his ability to evaluate coaches

4

Oct 24, 2023, 10:51 AM [ in reply to Bottom line is Dabo is only as good as his assistants ]

went from one of his strengths to the downfall of this program in 3 years.

My only difference of opinion, is that, before he cleans house, this man has to seriously look himself in the mirror and come to the realization that what he's doing is no longer working. That takes some serious nuts for a man sitting on a 9 figure valuation, 2 NC Trophies, damnear 12 conf championship trophies, probably close to 20 first round picks, 165 wins, etc. etc. etc.

I don't see it happening. He's getting humbled, so maybe I'm wrong here.

Really he needs a weekend in a tent with some ayahuasca and a medicine man to do some soul searching as a step 1.

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, was talking about this to someone earlier.

Oct 24, 2023, 2:24 PM

Literally every problem we have right now came directly from moves he made. Before step 2, fixing things, can happen, step 1 has to and that’s accurately diagnosing the problem. I’m not sure he’s in a place mentally where he’s ready to say that his instincts just belly flopped on multiple levels this time.

I honestly think that Dabo is of the mindset that the best coaches

are not the best that money can buy, but those who have not been offered money.

I remember my Bama buddies

saying eventually Dabo is gonna come home, circa 2019

Now they wouldn't touch him w/ a 10 foot pole.

His schtick would last about 18 games in Tuscaloosa, ESPECIALLY following Saban.

I see him going the Fulmer route and getting into Administration, tbh

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I see him walking away - he doesn't like the direction CFB is going

and will just go home.

I've been thinking this, too.

2

Oct 24, 2023, 10:39 AM

And of course, that makes my mind wander ahead to our next hire? Would Garrett Riley stay here long enough to build his cred and then take the reins if Dabo walked away? That's really deep conjecture on my part, but if not Riley, then who should we look to? This culture thing and Dabo's empire are not going to be easy for another coach to assume the duties, especially if it's a hardass type.

and a fund-raiser (he and Ms. Dabo are really into this breast cancer cause).

Probably wouldn't take much of a pay cut doing that, with 0% of the stress.
I wouldn't blame him one bit.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see him making it on TV

1

Oct 24, 2023, 10:48 AM

idk if y'all have experienced this, as it was kind of a shock to me, but get outside of the Clemson bubble, and people HATE Dabo.

His suicide watch comment, for example, would get him fired at ESPN. No doubt in my mind.

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah. He's not fit for TV.

Oct 24, 2023, 11:07 AM [ in reply to I don't see him making it on TV ]

it's full of ex-jocks and ex-coaches that range between raving lunatics and the brain dead.

you got Pat McAfee, Lou Holtz, Dan Orlovsky (sp?), Robert Griffin spouting crazy gibberish.

Then you have Urban Meyer, Mark Richt, Dan Mullen on the opposite spectrum. Watching weeds grow is more interesting than those 3.

You think Urbs or Holtz wasn't hated more than Dabo nationally?
Dabo could fit in fine anywhere between that gulf. He could pick his spot.

Jim H is a cheater. He ain't gonna survive the shid he's in right now.

Also, 2 CFP appearances. Zero natty since the turn of the century. Will lose a couple of games this year. Flavor of the week, not much more than that. And F Michigan.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Harbaugh has been a top tier coach for nearly two decades.

Oct 24, 2023, 10:56 AM

I don't like the guy but he is about as far from "flavor of the week" as you can get.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm referring to his current "level of success". Ranked #2

Oct 24, 2023, 11:09 AM

and will still lose 2. Happens frequently with them and him.

I'm not ready to model a program off of where he has them right now on Oct 24. He seems to stay in trouble with the NCAA and the most recent stuff will bring a large hammer to him, his coaches, and the program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he was "stealing signals"

1

Oct 24, 2023, 10:59 AM [ in reply to The mange is scrong with this one. Also, ]

right?

https://www.si.com/college/2020/11/06/clemson-signal-stealing-dabo-swinney-daily-cover

c'mon man that's softer than puppy shid, even for you. if your signals are getting stolen, change the fugging signals, that's part of the game, unless you got some Mi6 / Houston Astros operation going on.

over looked my point. his record since his staff overhaul vs Dabo's record in the same time frame. and you're taking Dabo's? I'm not saying hire Harbaugh, I'm saying look at this as an example of success in turning over a #### staff to a competent one (ya know, how we used to manage our club)

my other point was people being attached to Dabo. I'd like to enter my amigo from south of the border as exhibit A of evidence to support this claim lol

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wait and see. The NCAA will drop the hammer on that program.

Oct 24, 2023, 11:05 AM

Dirty AF, and busted AF.

Turn over your staff, hire cheaters, get caught.

Is that what we want?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have two things

Oct 24, 2023, 11:15 AM

1- I was ignorant of the sign stealing saga up there b/c I don't pay attention to much outside news. Allegations have guys filming coaches at other games...ok, yeah that's shiddy and bush league. I'll eat crow on that ONE PIECE

However, such ignorance does not remove this as a case study of someone turning their staff over and having success. It was the most recent one I could think of. Burning brought up Brian Kelly as well (who I personally ####### hate, btw) and he's right.

Like I said, I get there's Harbaugh haters - ok, fine. I'd love to play for him, personally. But ignore the noise and objectively look at the staff overhaul and the results after.

There's more options than a) hire cheaters and get banhammered or b) keep our staff in tact....stop it

2- NCAA won't do a GD thing. You serious? To a school like Michigan?

If Michigan gets the hammer dropped, and Tenner got off scott free, good lort that would be some atrocious legal management from Big Blue.

If anything, I see Harbaugh getting fired as a result. Still - I standby my point to use his staff turnover 3 years ago as a case study for a coach being able to do that and having success.

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well hey, Dabo HAS turned over his staff and had success.

2

Oct 24, 2023, 11:27 AM

That's one of the many reasons we got to the top of the mountain. His staff turned over AGAIN, and this time it had the opposite effect.

I guess the question is, how fast do you turn it over yet again? Or do you? I'm not sure. At the same time, it's really hard to rebound from the loss of a guy like BV. The best, hands down, DC in the history of CFB IMO. Also a guy that I think was influential to more than just the defense. It could be that we missed on a current coach or 2.

I'm certainly not thrilled that we are a 4-3 team right now that could very well lose more games. I'll also say that we clean up stupid turnovers and the season looks very different. Not here to say that all is rainbows and sunshine, but that stuff DOES happen in sport and may not justify a staff revamp or change in philosophy.

Generally we look BORING in all aspects and seem to have some skittish PTSD going back to Duke. The collective confidence of the group is shook and probably rightfully so, and I'm not sure we'll get that back this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

agree with the sentiment here, with one stipulation

1

Oct 24, 2023, 3:01 PM

Dabo has been more promoting than turning over. He's farming his coaches from within and propagating them up through the staff.

Splitting hairs, but I think it's a pretty key differentiator to going and getting Chad, BV, Riley, etc. as a comparison to Scott, Elliott, Goodwin, Hall, Richardson, Grisham and Austin.

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

New assistants make sense but its hard to know who is a home run hire.***

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1. Thank you for lightening the mood.

1

Oct 24, 2023, 11:03 AM

2. This off-season will be telling. If he doesn't make major personnel changes now then he won't ever do it. I don't begrudge him for giving it a shot with Riley with Dabo-picked position coaches and I don't begrudge him for not making changes in-season. But, its time to cut off the dead wood. I think he will do what needs to be done.

3. Where would Dabo go? Probably take some honorary title in the AD and do fundraising for Clemson and his foundation as others suggested. He has other business interests that could take his time. I do think other programs would jump to hire him but I doubt he would leave Clemson for another job.

4. Where would Clemson go? Who knows. I'd love to bring BV back but that will not happen. Clemson will be fine in the long run.

5. Brian Kelly at ND is another example of the phenomenon you identify. They had a bad year and he cleaned house, rebooted, and took ND to another level.
