Living in the 'cans' was a hoot...at first no A/C...we did fine...then remodeled with A/C and new insulation sprayed on the ceiling...which collapsed in some rooms! Some great times there...parties when the gov held the draft lottery...fellow on 'D' got in on the 1st number and jumped out the window but we were on the second floor and all he did was mess up the grass! Great boxing matches on thursday nights in the small C/D quadrangle while studying for friday tests and fun wetting down the hall with 'tide' and playing hockey with your broom and a wiffaball! Steak night at the cafeteria was a big deal as was porkchop night...those ladies could cook! Breakfast was my favorite...all you wanted..as an employee eat breakfast and dinner and never buy a meal ticket...what a deal! If you bought a meal card it was good even for the next semester as long as it was in the same year...at any of the cafeterias!

When I arrived on campus in 1970 they were finishing the installation of the AC unit of my room as I unpacked. No phones in the rooms. There was a pay phone at the end of the hall. Still it was one of the best times of my life.

1972 was on D6 freshman and sophomore years. Life was simple...great times.

This photo was D-6 and D-5 on the interior side (basically over the D-section underpass) in the '77 to '78 time frame. (Note: I got this from the internet. It may be a TAPS photo)
The event was one of the typical E-section vs. D-section vs. C-section shouting matchs (cheers, jeers, and insults) that would occur from time to time. It doesn't look cold enough to be the biggest one I remember which occured during a freeze and the drive got iced down for cafeteria tray sliding.
My guess is this was probably a spring '78 final exam study night that got things going. It was very common that someone who needed to relieve some stress during exams would shout something random out of their window. Most of the time there would be little or no response to the shout. But every so often someone else would shout a reply that either was so humorous or so denigrating that it demanded the attention of the adjoining sections. If that happened it was basically "Game -on" and for the next 10 to 15 minutes a shouting contest would ensue to see who could one-up the chain of shouted comments. Because most responses were not that good, the event usually died with only a few participants and the rest of us were only mildly entertained. But the one in this picture took on a much larger scale. Not only did just about everyone in the interior rooms participate, but guys from the exterior rooms, B-section and F-section gathered on the ground where the drive went under D underpass. If I recall correctly the shouting went on for about an hour and finally broke up after the guys on the ground stated getting pelted with water, fruit and other objects.
Johnstone may not have been a prestigious dorm (OK, it was a slum), but it was indestructible, with huge halls that enabled great comradery, fantastic keg parties, and innumerable amount of invented sports (i.e., frisby wars, slip'in slide (tile floors w/soap and water), indoor hockey, soccer, etc.), so I HATED to see it go. Johnstone will forever be the frame for my best times of College Life for me.
