When you have players that aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, you have to make the signals simple. Easy to steal during the game.
I'm sure from the press box, their signals were easy to figure out as far as pass or run. You wouldn't need anything else.

What sucks about the media today is they take everything at face value if it is controversial as they need the drama for clicks.
A good reporter would have asked a follow up question. Coach, if you knew they had your signals, why did you not change them prior to the game so their Defense would be defending the wrong play? Did you consider using a substitution (RB or WR) to communicate the plays? Seems like anything would have been better than maintain the status quo and losing the game. Did you consider any options to mitigate the concern or were you too busy doodling the volleyball coach?

Sign stealing MI style vs non-MI style: Very different

The Michigan version of sign stealing is very different than the ‘sign stealing’ of most other colleges.
Most colleges ‘steal signs’ by watching game film of an opponent, correlating the play that the opponent ran with the sign signal for that play, and then deducing which from among the various signs being shown on the sidelines relates to the play that was actually run.
This process is analogous to a baseball game, when there is a runner on 2nd base and he looks in at the catcher, recognizes the catcher’s signals to the pitcher which calls for a fastball, curve, change up, slider, splitter, etc, with the final act being for the runner on 2nd signaling to the hitter which pitch will be thrown. This process is entirely legal.
Illegal sign stealing, MI style, involves inserting fake ‘fans,’ recruits, volunteer assistants, etc. on the sidelines or within the opposing school’s football organization. That ‘double agent’ then learns of the signals and how those signals correlate with each individual play, and finally conveying that information back to Khaki Pants staff.
Bobby Petrino is conflating the MI (illegal) sign stealing process with that of the typical school’s (perfectly legal) activities of ‘sign stealing.’
Who really GAS about what Bobby Petrino thinks, anyways?

The sad thing about this comment is that most people are ignorant to the actual rules. During a game coaches can try and steal the other teams' signals...this has happened since football and signs started, and EVERYONE does it.
What Michigan is accused of is WAY different and actually IS AGAINST THE RULES.
Petrino, once a loser always a loser. Carry on and pay it no attention as only a fool would listen to another fool.

To show what kind of character they have at Texas A$M, they hired this guy as their OC last year. You can’t make this stuff up.
The only person my friend Lloyd Carr ever said anything negative about in all the times we’ve talked is Petrino. He simply said, ‘I don’t care for him”. Pretty telling.

I don’t get it. We started stealing signs in Dixie Youfh Baseball when I was eight years old. Part of the game in 1961.
