I recall DJ Reader being a “plan B” recruit

Jan 22, 2022, 6:11 PM

He was committed to Merryland and we offered at the last minute and developed him into one of the best DTs in the game. He’s having a huge impact in this game.

Just a reminder for those upset with some of the guys we are after to finish this class.

Coty Sensabaugh and Trenton Simpson… same story.

Very very small percentage

Jan 22, 2022, 6:33 PM

you are referring to. Most of the time those types of recruits do not make it.

Trenton Simpson was a plan B recruit due to mistakes made by the coaches in evaluating him

He was also a 5 star plan B.

not have an offer until the end. He was dreaming of playing here. He wanted to be here. We were holding out for Justin Flowe who has done very little.

Only due to injury, he’s a good player.

Both players were 5 star, and then one went to Oregon last second and surprised us.

Well Dabo’s old recruiting strategy is over

with. His christening recruits with his offer ship has sailed. He and Clemson got a little too big for their britches.

Re: Well Dabo’s recruiting strategy is over: You're insane

Jan 22, 2022, 7:59 PM

Dabo's "old recruiting strategy" is over???

So Dabo and Oregon (and everyone else) miss-evaluated 5* LB Justin Flowe, and Oregon got Flowe, and Clemson's 'old recruiting strategy' had a replacement player (T.Simpson, who also happened to be a 5*) courted sufficiently that he (as a 'late / fall-back' recruit) committed to Clemson.

OMG, what a terrible recruiting strategy. Powerful example there @TD Tigers.

Dabo had another DT as the primary target over DJ Reader; the other DT goes elsewhere and Dabo has a backup plan that he deployed to get DJ Reader. I don't know which DT 'jilted' Clemson, but Dabo is, according to you, once again obsolete recruiter and got DJ Reader to join us DESPITE Dabo's incompetence.

Another great example.

And ... wait for it, wait for it ... OK, here's yet another example of Dabo's 'old recruiting strategy' which you seem to despise. Clemson missed out on 4* WR Andre Green (who signed with UNC) and was able to get 4* Antonio Williams as a last minute 'Plan B.' We'll see how AG and W play out on the field.

Sure enough, you've taught the board a lot and should contact Dabo immediately before he plays in traffic and starts barking and chasing automobiles.

Gheeze there are some real doozies on this board.

Levi Garret. Dabo is currently taking players that were never on our recruiting board. That is going to have an impact on performance. Part of that is poor recruiting tactics and roster management and BV leaving. He is responsible for most of this class. My point is that his style of recruiting is going to have to change. This class is proof of that.

So grab a chaw and a bud and sit your rear end down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably the best example

Jan 22, 2022, 8:22 PM [ in reply to Re: Well Dabo’s recruiting strategy is over: You're insane ]

Cordarrion Richardson was Clemson’s primary RB recruit but decided to attend Memphis. Dabo’s backup plan is a guy from Jennings LA named Travis Etienne. Worked out in our favor for sure.

Recruiting is certainly an inexact science but I love the way Dabo does it. Identify your guy, offer, and don’t go offering a bunch of fallback options that you later cut loose when your top guy chooses your program. That’s why a Clemson offer means so much to recruits.

And Dabo will adjust…

Jan 22, 2022, 8:23 PM [ in reply to Re: Well Dabo’s recruiting strategy is over: You're insane ]

the 2023 class will likely be a top 10 class. But the portal will be his biggest problem if he can’t retain depth.

You cannot lose seasoned players and replace them with hs recruits year after year.

So when do you take over Coach Dabo?
It seems that you have it all figured out and should be mass producing A Natty every year!

Jan 22, 2022, 7:25 PM

I’ll be honest I do not remember Reader being a commit to Maryland. Of course there’s a lot of things I don’t remember nowadays. I do know he got a offer from Clemson late 2010 and signed February 2012.

Here’s the story from the only source worth trusting

Jan 22, 2022, 7:59 PM

Funny that most fellow Tigers were more interested in his baseball careers than football. He only took 2 visits despite having some other offers. 3 star guy.

I remember him being a baseball guy too. But he wasn’t offered at the last minute. The link you out was just where he chose Clemson.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He was an afterthought up until close to signing day

Jan 22, 2022, 8:11 PM

He was definitely a plan B. Just like Sensabaugh, Simpson, etc.

Just sayin.

There are plenty of others

Jan 22, 2022, 8:52 PM

Mike Williams, Denzel Johnson, Grady Jarrett, Nolan Turner, Simmons was a late offer, K'von Wallace was late.

Let's be honest here. We had 4 last minute decommits beyond anyone's control which has led us down our recruiting board and to expand it. When you're only planning on a class of 17-18, and 4 guys that would have had us at 16 bail that late in the process, not a whole lot that can be done.

However, we've landed a 3 star CB. A bit of a project WR, appear to be the leader for Lawson, an athletic 3 star who needs to add a lot of good weight, appear to be in very good shape for 4 star DE Story, have a 3 star safety who was committed to Miss St and his 4 star teammate LB who we are finalists for, in very good shape for a 3-4 star LB from Florida, and apparently are recruiting a couple of former 4 star DT's as transfers. Not sure I like our chances with the RB from Texas to much for the same reason young ETN went to UF, playing time.

For unanticipsted scrambling, it could be a lot worse.

Striper you are dead on. With everything that we went through in December I feel fortunate that we could possibly get back to top 15 in the recruiting rankings.

The problem is after early signing day, we are way past plan B. Hopefully we can find some diamonds in rough and that’s what the staff is paid to do.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I trust the staff to find some good ones

Jan 22, 2022, 10:53 PM

And to adjust their strategy a little moving forward.

Seems like a lot of our “project players” stay a while and end up providing good depth. One thing that killed Bama is a lot of their backups and 3rd stringers transferred out and when guys got hurt it was mostly freshmen filling in who just weren’t in sync with the other guys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We also had Dan Brookes

Jan 22, 2022, 10:45 PM

Finding and developing diamonds like Reader.
