I predict Goodwin and Grisham will be fired/reassigned after

this season.

The problems on defense are holistic and fundamental. There are not one or two things to point to. It's totally bad all over the place for multiple reasons.

The problems on offense largely stem from bad WR's.

Pressure, lack of downfield throws, screens being called.... all of it stems from bad WRs.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Include Austin in that group!***

pressure thanks to the defense being able to ignore a WR threat.

They opened holes against bigger numbers. We moved the ball down the field. Cade doesn't have a good pocket presence to avoid sacks.

We made more pressure on them with less results because their QB makes way better choices with his feet.

I agree with him its not a technique issue with the OL. Seriously the OL has always historically been weak, this is a S&C issue. Austin has these guys playing hard and mostly with good technique, they just arent getting strong enough while here at Clemson. Unless they(all football players) came in fast or strong as an ox they leave with minimal gains in strength and speed.

The DL was basically gap diving (had a great jump) and won inside leverage until the tackle literally threw him back on the outside.... right where Mafah was.

That’s a generous assessment of our LT. He was totally passive. Had he simply actively pinched him to the inside, he would have taken the lineman out of the play and it would’ve been a one on one with Mafah versus the linebacker. No fumble.

talent acquisition philosophy by Dabo.

I don't think just plugging in a new WR/recruiting coordinator is going to magically change our fortunes..........utilizing all resources to acquire talent is key.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree that even the best WR coach can't fix a lack of

Sep 5, 2023, 4:58 PM

talent. But I am not confident Dabo will embrace the portal. If he relies on development, then he will have to see that no development is taking place at that position.

We obviously need better WRs immediately. But I don't feel confident predicting what will happen there. But Grisham and Goodwin are confirmed failures in my opinion.

Its like this....

Sep 5, 2023, 8:22 PM

..the coaches should be able to recognize that our WRs can't execute a screen or a pass out to the perimeter to our WRs. This way we don't repeat the same mistake 100,000 times a year with the same bad result.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because no deep game opens up screens for us.

1

Sep 5, 2023, 5:02 PM

And we can't throw it deep because our QB and WR's are not collectively capable of executing one.

And that is recruiting and development.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Because no deep game opens up screens for us.

Sep 5, 2023, 5:05 PM

And I would add our receivers don’t block on screens. Everyone else runs the same stuff and looks thousands of times better.

schedule and a lot of 3-3-5, which has become a thing there.

What it appeared to do last night, was open up the midline run game as the screen game is designed to wear out the middle of the defense by forcing them to pursue to the sidelines.

Clemson gashed Duke in the 3rd likely as a result of it, even Elko admitted Clemson was leaning on his boys.

I don't know what the staff will do, it's their job, maybe they go to stacking again or as DHood suggested get the younger players more involved? What I have learned is Garrett Riley's tendencies from his time at TCU and SMU[built off his time at ECU & App St], he's a 50/50 guy that believes in the run and institutes the screen game in support.

The down field game has some work to do[still not throwing deep into 2 or 3 high], but I only commented on the screen game.

Re: I predict Goodwin and Grisham will be fired/reassigned after

Goodwin isn’t going anywhere.

Our defense wasn’t the problem last night. There were the usual first game coverage busts (not many, but costly as far as field position and time of possession when they did occur). There were a couple of times when P.Woods did not maintain control of his gap; these occasions led to productive runs by Duke. Finally, the tackling wasn’t anything special … especially disappointing from our LBs.

Had it not been for our deep in the red zone offense SNAFUs, we would have beaten Duke by a comfortable (i.e., 9+) point margin.

Grisham? He can’t coach the WRs to run faster or to not get the yips when accurate passes are theirs for the catching.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The defense gave up 6.6 yards per rush. That's pathetic.

Sep 5, 2023, 9:06 PM

Re: The defense gave up 6.6 yards per rush. That's pathetic.

Sep 5, 2023, 10:03 PM

That’s def one thing I noticed last night, and really last year… it’s like guys are there for the tackle and if it’s missed it’s a 5-10 yard gain east after contact… seems like our better defenses just swarmed to the ball and there were always 3-4 guys around the tackle or ball… doesn’t seem like that now. And the fact we can’t get pressure on a qb with the talent on that dl the last two years is if blowing… even when we bring pressure we don’t seem to get to the qb

Wes also needs to account for is how his LBs are playing with poor technique. But I think the holistic cohesiveness falls on Conn.

Too many projects to count. He’d be a great “keep” if he was the only one whilst coaching LBs and helping with game prep (like before).
