I would love to see Oliver Purnell come back to Clemson

I know it would probably never happen but one can hope. I used to love doing the “down with OPP” chant in my living room.

hmmm. It seems that people completely forget about the OP's results while he was at Clemson. Hiring him back would be a significant downgrade.
Oliver Purnell never won an NCAA tourney game. Brownell has won 3.
Brownell has a better ACC win percentage
Free Throws are significantly better under Brownell
Purnell had an unorthodox style where he would recruit athletes instead of skilled basketball players. We would catch some teams off guard and get wins, but whenever a team had time to prepare for us, we would lose. Kind of like GT in football.

Brownell had one good tournament run, he hasn't consistently gotten us there like Purnell did.
Just to add a litte context to Brownell's ACC record....it's actually lower than what it was under Purnell at the end of his tenure. We had a winning record each of his last three seasons in the league and played for an ACC championship losing to the eventual national champion by 4 points.
Purnell's style was exactly what Clemson needed to succeed on a consistent basis because it attracted better athletes. If you haven't noticed, we don't exactly get the cream of the crop basketball talent, but we were starting to recruit better players under Purnell. His last class was ranked 15th in the nation.

His last class was his only good one in terms of star rating, and honestly that was an incredibly over-rated class.
Milton Jennings - Simply was not good. Doubt he would start on this team Devin Booker - A little better, but just average Noel Johnson - Transferred and never did anything at Auburn Donte Hill - Transferred to a small school.
I would rather have a coach get us to the tourney twice and win 3 games, then a coach that gets us there 3 times seasons and doesn't win a single game.
I could cherry pick stats from Brownell too. For instance, in 2017, we lost to UNC in overtime and UNC ended up winning the national championship.

You’re ignoring the fact that Brownell inherited a program that was better than his has been. OP inherited a dumpster fire.
Purnell was building a program. We had reached a level of consistency. 20+ wins and a tournament appearance was expected. Now we don’t even know if we’ll make the postseason.

This is a common misconception. Just because we went to the tourney and lost in the first round the 3 prior years doesn't mean that Brownell inherited a good program.
By that logic, you can say Willie Taggart was left a good Football Program in FSU...
Purnell left out of nowhere without telling any of his players. It was late in the recruiting process and Brownell was unable to get a recruit that cycle.
You do agree that traditionally at Clemson, our productive players are Juniors and Seniors right? We don't sign elite talent that can contribute right away. That has never been our thing.
In Brownell's third year his Seniors were Devin Booker and Milton Jennings. He had no Juniors
In Brownell's fourth year, he had 0 seniors.
To say Brownell was left a good program shows that you have 0 critical thinking skills. You are not looking beyond "we went to the tourney the prior 3 years derp"
Oh yeah. And when Brownell started at Clemson we had the worst facilities, the worst administrative support, and the worst basketball tradition in the ACC.

LOL. I was cherry picking stats just like you did.
"I would love to see OP back in Clemson. There was this one time that he lost in the ACC Championship game"
What a loser type of argument.

The only way you can even remotely dispute that OP was better than Brownell is by cherry picking the stats.
In context there is no dispute. The entire fan base actually looked forward to basketball season when he was here.

Saying Purnell is way better than Brownell is complete nonsense. Purnell ran a gimmick style of basketball and we peaked w/ getting to the tourney and losing in the first round.
And then he left the team without saying anything to the players or administration. What a POS move. And some people want him back. SMH

The NCAA tourney wins aren't nearly as important of a stat as many make it out to be IMO. One of those wins was in a play-in and we still lost in the opening round of 64. Aside from that, winning a game or two in the tourney can depend a lot on who you get matched up with. Considering we've only had 1 season under Brownell where we've gotten past the opening round I'd hardly say that's worth a brag in comparison.
In terms of the ACC win percentage, that's completely ignoring the program each coach took over. Purnell had a conference record of 8-24 over his first two seasons, and then went 42-38 over his final 5 seasons. Brownell went 17-15 over his first two seasons, and has gone 64-73 since.
So basically you're making a point that Brownell is better because he did a better job during his first two years with a program that had reached the NCAA tourney 3 years in a row, and gone 26-20 in the ACC over those 3 years than Purnell did in his first two years after taking over a program that had gone 20-60 in conference over a 5 year period with the previous coach?

Also, Purnell's overall winning percentage of .605 was better than Brownell's current winning percentage of .568. That's even with Purnell going 10-18 in his first season.

Would love to have Oliver Purnell's records right now that he accumulated thru years while at Clemson and his postseasons appearances, just not his postseason records and also would not want Oliver Purnell back because of how he left Clemson and how he did at Depaul which was not very good at all

I think Larry Shyatt might be worth another chance too. Coaches often learn from their mistakes and failures. Larry has had plenty of those. Its worth a chance on Shyatt.

There have also been quite a few seasons that were basically identical w/ Purnell and Brownell. Despite almost identical seasons, Purnell's team made the NCAA and Brownell's didn't.
Which season would you rather have?
2009 Season (Under Purnell)
Record: 21-11 ACC Record: 9-7 ACC Finish: 6th
Ranked wins: 2 (one was Butler) Bad Losses: 2
Postseason: Lost in the First round of the NCAA
2013 Season (under Brownell)
Record: 23-13 ACC Record: 10-8 ACC Finish: 6th
Ranked wins: 1 Bad Losses: 2
Postseason: Lost in the Semi Finals of the NIT
