I've long been curious about this--are Lowcountry restaurants really telling the truth about where their shrimp comes from? Are they actually sourced locally? I've mostly assumed so, at least for mid- and higher-end one-off places. A lot of people don't even really care--a shrimp is a shrimp. I read up on the farming practices in Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. some 10 or 15 years ago, and it's pretty horrifying--I would never, EVER order shrimp at any kind of chain restaurant after reading that.
That said...the restaurant industry has become a fight for survival, especially after Covid, and a lot of owners/chefs are going to cut any corners they can. And honestly, it's hard to blame them.
Anyway, this is the testing part--looking forward to the results, assuming they'll be published.

Art's (and the geechie dock) are the only places I trust to have local shrimp
May 29, 2025, 1:59 PM

Because 1) geechie dock literally unloads the shrimp off the boats right there and sells it, and 2) I was in Art's one day drinking beer when I saw Wayne Magwood (RIP) drop off about 30lbs of shrimp he had just caught.
Mt P seafood even (sometimes) has frozen skrimps.

the Waveland Super-Walmart. On multiple occasions she was robbed and shot. She would recover and go right back to selling shrimp in that same parking lot.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a whole different world.
