Newsflash, they'd never admit it, but West Virginia wishes

they were in the ACC right now. They didn't go to the Big 12 until it was abundantly clear to them that they were not getting an invite to the ACC or SEC. They were turned down by both.
Why did they prefer the ACC over Big12? They didn't want to be on an island and they prefer to do battle with regional rivals of their ilk like VT, Clemson, Miami, FSU, North Carolina, NC State, Pitt, etc, rather than being an after thought to Texas, Oklahoma, Okla State. Maybe the ACC should have invited them for their atmosphere and level of play, but remember they only seat 10,000 more than Syracuse and have lost three in a row to Cuse. I know we had a bad night and baaaaaad defense vs WVU, but they won their last three reg. eason games by a total of seven points.
Why do you think most of the Big12 expansion BS comes from the WVU boards? Because they desparately want someone from this part of the country to join them in the Big12. Even if that someone is on an island from the Big12 and WVU at least it would mean WVu wasn't all by themselves. They are also very angry at the ACC for not inviting them. They are happy to be in the Big12 because it was their best option after the ACC and SEC rejected them, but they would have much rather landed in the ACC or SEC. They feel very uncomfortable about being in the Big12 even though that was their best option in the end. They would at least like to see Clemson or FSU go, if for no other reason, it would make their decision look like a legit, choice that they wanted to make. While it actually was a last ditch option in which they had no other choice.
If Clemson or FSU felt they were in a conference that was not going to be at the big boy table, or a conference that makes drastically less than the Big12, they would have swallowed all the geographical discomfort and really pushed for the move. As it turns out, our conference is at the big boy table and we are not desparate. The money difference between the Big12 and the ACC must also not be significant enough to warrant a move.
But make no mistake, if West Virginia fans were honest, they'd say they'd rather be in the ACC than the Big12 right this minute.

Maybe in a couple years the ACC will invite them in....

Its not unheard of if a school jumps to one Conference, then leaves to join another.... I do not know all the details WHY the ACC did not invite them, but it was a mistake. I have heard something about "poor academics"... but what people don't know is that there are relativally few schools in WV, and WVU takes in ALL type of students, from the borderline brain dead to the best and brightest. ALL thier departments are accredited, they have a Medical School ... snobbery on the ACC's part?
Trivia: CEO Of CISCO is a WVU Grad...

makes more geographic sense, natural rivalries... WVU not too far from VT, Pitt, 5 hours max from UMD... WVU in the ACC if anything would help improve thier academics, not drive everybody else down ... plus you get a GREAT Football School, and other sports not too shabby either!
BONUS TRIVIA: THEY SELL BEER AT THE FOOTBALL GAMES... IN THE STADIUM!

That is almost solely because they give priority and support to students from WV. What a concept?? A state supported school supporting students of parents in the state of West Virginia!! I sure wouldn't want Clemson to do something like that??? As an fyi, this post is something I would expect from UNC, Duke, UVA, etc. Academics are certainly very important but to suggest taking in students from their own state is an indication of how poor they would do in college or how capable/bright they are is an unsubstaniated viewpoint. I hope I never make the assumptions you have eluded to.

I never understood the whole "academic" disscussion. A conference is out there to make money (and thats the truth if you look at these bowl agreements and tv deals). Not once...the subject of academics are mentioned.

They're ranked 164 among national universities. Having a few successful alums has nothing to do with academic quality. There are more CEO's that didn't graduate from college than there are CEO's that went to WVU.

for a reality show. But I must admit, I was stunned at how many people didn't have lives to the point that they keep wanting an update. Why don't you go buy a copy of People Magazine, I hear TomKat is on the cover.

talking to a bunch of WVU fans...they seem pretty happy about being in the Big 12. I'm sure there are a few that are not happy but it would be the same case if Clemson joined the big 12...some would be happy and some not. They might not have been the first choice of the Big 12, but they now they are in a better conference and has the opportunity to play in primetime.

Oh come on, we wish we were in the Big 12...where have you been? Seriously, I don't think the Big 12 is the answer but one way to shore up the ACC was to add W Va. We should be the ones wishing they were here. At least it would counter the BS from NC. By the way, biggest cheating scandal in history of ACC (maybe NCAA) and nothing is happening to the almighty UNC...why?

I don't think they like going alone amongst eastern schools. Their bloggers and fans tried to dog the ACC to help push FSU and Clemson to the Big 12 and it didn't work.
Quite frankly the way it is now I think the ACC is a better conference long term than the Big 12. The Big 12 lost too much and didn't get enough back in return imo. I think it's great news for the Sooners and Longhorns b/c they should be able to dominate that conference for years to come. West Virginia to me isn't going to be any better than they have been in the Big East the last 10 years. TCU has seen the last of their top 10 days as well now. The only team I'm actually buying to sustain long term success is Oklahoma St.
