Wife got nailed at Kiawah few years back. She was holding our 2yo in the surf and was hit. She screamed, i ran over grabbed TiggityJr, and she walked back to the beach chairs. Her foot, between the ankle and achilles heel had a HOLE through it, like someone shoved a pencil through, in one side, out the other. She almost passed out. The venom is painful.

Beach patrol came buy with a 5-gallon bucket of hot water, which takes away the pain. Luckily it was a clean poke, nothing broke off inside, which can happen and is a big complication.

Over 600 people a year get mailed by stingrays in SC......the Kiawah tourism board left that part out of the brochure.

Learned 2 things, hot water literally stops the venom from hurting, and second, ALWAYS shuffle your feet in the sand when walking in the ocean. Don't pick up your feet and walk, but slide your feet along the bottom. This way you hit a stingray and they will get out of the way. Step on one and it will attack.
