Rewatched the Duke game

4

Oct 1, 2023, 4:44 PM

I don’t know why I do this to myself.

Couple of major takeaways. .

1. TOs were big but was not the only reason we lost.

2. Duke offense just seemed to be faster and more athletic than our defense.

…rewatch.

Just really surprised me that Duke’s QB and both RBs seemed to be faster than anyone on our defense.

We have a very good defense but we need to recruit more speed on that side of the ball.

Our LB's admitted they weren't in shape.

Need to tackle better. Especially at LB.

Maybe there was too much ‘All American’ hype about Carter and Trotter before the season. Both of these guys are spectacular with their speed and instincts; that was the justification for their lofty pre-season accolades.

Hopefully they will become more consistent tacklers moving forward. If that happens, then their preseason AA status will be justified.

Trotter and carter do not look nfl ready. Looks like we need new conditioning guy if they not in shape.

Oct 2, 2023, 1:37 PM [ in reply to I know but I am more objective during the ]

I will say this, if those guy make the tackles most the runs are for minimal. Busted coverages will make things look different too. Carter is FAST but he busted a few assignments and it made him look slow, Trotter is not a burner so if he gets caught looking its going to be bad if a rb sneaks out on a wheel.

Speed in the second level is not lacking, that twitchy Edge guy though...outside XT theres no one. Parker is awesome but hes a grinder not going to just blow by guys with good technique. Parker is very much like Clelin Ferrel id like to see another Vic Beasley type come in to compliment next year.

I dont need to rewatch.

Tackling was awful and still has moments of w.t.f. now.

How many times did you note plays were blown up in the backfield but the defender missed or got muscled out of the way?

On offense 2 fumbles on their side of the field hurt. Not playing the best wrs on the team hurt, not having any balls to play for TDs hurt(this is my biggest gripe rn but i do believe its a matter of the coaching staff gelling at this point), and the killer was Cade not realizing he needed to slide later or dive for that first down on 4th.

The OL was good but they were bad in too many critical moments if that makes sense? I think the playcalling really put them in a bad spot on a few of those.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our tackling (or lack of) was really bad in that game, too.

1

Oct 1, 2023, 6:27 PM

But, unlike yesterday, we had no offense, with all the turnovers, to overcome the poor tackling on defense.

No.

TO’s don’t happen then we win that game by two scores.

Defense was not inspired, that s on the coaches. Duke played harder. They’re players are not more athletic than Clemson

I saw their QB run a 45 yard TD untouched.

I saw both RBs run away from just about everyone on our defense on several occasions.

I am not saying we have a bad defense. We don’t. But Duke sure looked faster that night on offense.

Honestly it appeared that the Tigers took Duke lightly from a coaching and player perspective and it showed.

Did not have the urgency to start the game and by the time we got going Duke had gained confidence.

It couldn't be because Duke had a game plan that got our defenders out of position. Because again, Florida St.'s guys didn't look faster that our defenders.

Seems like all Dabo's teams are a step slow to begin the season every year and get better and faster as the year progresses. Guess that is why we need cupcakes front loaded in the schedule or go ahead and have a couple of Exhibition Games like Dabo has been begging for incessantly for years!

Watched the Duke rerun to focus on one player; Blake Miller.

B. Miller was very poor in his pass blocking against Duke. IMO, for that game, he was the weak link in our OL. His poor play contributed significantly to our offense’s struggles.

(We all know that CK2 simply didn’t look ready to win games against good FB teams when playing Duke.)

Good news, though. From what I could gather from FSU and Syracuse games, B.Miller played very well. Right up ther with Marcus Tate and Will Putnam.

Of course, we all witnessed meaningful improvement in CK2’s play from Duke vs FSU vs Syracuse. Not a finished product by a long shot, but good enough for us to beat teams that we should beat (Wake, NCSU, GA Tech). If he keeps improving at the same rate as he did between Duke game to Syracuse game, we have a puncher’s chance at winning the rest of the games on our schedule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, I completely agree.***

Well then Duke must be one of the fastest teams on the planet, because Florida St. certainly didn't look faster ans more athletic than our defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Duke seemed as fast if not faster than us.

Oct 2, 2023, 10:08 AM

Game stats

Oct 2, 2023, 12:07 PM

Are for losers. Only one stat counts in college football. I bet you are clever enough to figure out which one really counts!

DUKE had the best stat in this game.... by a considerable margin.

We might get a chance to redeem ourselves if Duke can make it to the big game in Charlotte. How great would that be.

Oct 2, 2023, 12:09 PM

It was more of our LB's and Safeties taking bad/incorrect angles than speed, IMO.

1. TO's were huge. Did you pay attention to where they happened? 3 trips inside the 10 with no points.

2. Duke was very athletic, they are a good team. Elko has that program on the upswing. They should have beat ND but they collapsed on the last drive ... prevent defense ...

3. Bottom Line - we beat ourselves, mistakes, ball control, no real run game to speak of.

Now what I would like to know is what happens a halftime, our 3d quarter play has been pretty flat all around...

Re: Rewatched the Duke game

Oct 2, 2023, 12:39 PM

I attached the stats for the game.

We won every important stat there is, except Turnover Margin. And it was by only 1:

Those turnovers WERE the reason we lost that game. The domino effect of a turnover, like ones that occur inside the 10 yard line, is tremendous.

If we do not fumble on at least 1 or maybe both, we score. Either 3 or a TD. But rather, we got nothing. Those points could’ve completely changed that game.

I will say that there weren’t as many explosive plays happening. Even though the offense was driving the field every time.

2025 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NOOOOOOO

Oct 2, 2023, 1:41 PM

Was it easier to view knowing what was going to happen ???

And yes, this year Duke is a good enough team to challenge for ACC crown. They played a great game with ND, right up until they did the proverbial loser move of going 3 down lineman after pressuring Hartman into bad decisions during the 2nd half.

I think our Tigers win the game without the 14 point swing that completely changed the game. We score and the game flow completely changes, the confidence on our side is high and on their side is hindered.

Either way it matters not, the outplayed our Tigers and deserved the W.
