Terrible post.
I don't agree at all about Cade. He does have flaws as a QB. I think he sometimes doesn't have the best field awareness/vision. He doesn't always see open receivers and isn't always aware of where the first down marker is, so dumps it off too short on third and longs. I also think he does hold onto the ball too long on some plays. That said, he has a lot of strengths as well. He has a fast release. He's accurate. He is extremely good at making things happen with his feet when the play breaks down. And he has the necessary arm strength to make the necessary throws. Cade's #11 in the country in passing yards, #3 in passing touchdowns, #12 in passing touchdown percentage, and #7 in interception percentage. He's not Deshaun or Trevor, but he's pretty darn elite.
As for who I'd replace with portal players, there aren't many on offense. I would have tried to bring in a couple offensive linemen, as ours, while significantly improved under Luke, just isn't there compared to most of the other playoff teams. I might have also looked for a ~6'4" possession style receiver to help our boundary play, since we now have a bunch of speedsters. I'd have tried to bring in a top running back. I don't know if they'd beat out Mafah or not, as I do think he's very good when healthy, but I would like a player who complements him since he has such a specific style, and it would at least bring in much-needed depth. So I would actively hunt for a couple new offensive line starters (and I think there were portal players better than some of our current guys), and would take a specific kind of back or receiver if I found them (but wouldn't hunt for them).
On defense, I think there are a bit more. I would go hard after an elite defensive end. While Parker is great, Lawson is not at the level we should expect for a DE. I would target a new strong safety type player. A good strong safety can be huge for a defense. Think about the value add K'Von or Tanner were for us during our peak. Obviously, Kylon and Venables just aren't as talented, and I think a lot of the big plays teams have from runs are because of them. I also think a new elite corner could beat out Lukus. Finally, I would look for a new defensive tackle, but this isn't one I'd be killing for, and would be more a guy we could take a shot at who is under the radar.
So I guess there are about 5 positions where I think we have holes (2 offensive linemen, DE, SS, and corner). I think it's pretty obvious how that would help us dramatically: the linemen to improve our run blocking and defensive players to improve our ability to get to the QB and stop the run. There are a couple other positions where I like our current starters, but could see us adding someone to add in a new look or provide necessary depth. But that's what I mean when I say the best approach is to mostly use home-grown players, but fill in talent gaps with the portal. You don't need 18 starters to be from the portal if you're us. But our team does have a pretty large disparity in talent in certain positions.
And I will flag that I think most of our defensive woes come from Goodwin, not from the personnel. If we stuck with the 4-3 and actually used blitzes, our run defense would be dramatically better and we'd get to the QB more.

No one saying we need to go out and buy a whole team like those schools but we do need to bring in some talent at spots of need, even more so bc our recruiting class was raised. I don’t think Dabo likes the portal but I thinks he has come around to knowing he needs to use it or we will be left behind! Go Tigers!!!

I agree that he doesn’t “want” to use the portal but I think (hope) he realizes he needs to. The CFB landscape has changed. We can’t keep losing recruits and players to the portal and hope to make up the difference .. times have changed. Wanting and needing are different.

We all know he doesn't want to, but he seems to be coming around on the fact that it will be a necessary evil that isn't going away. There is always the fear of the unknown. Once he dips his toe in the water and sees that it can be a helpful advantage, he will get more comfortable with it. He will never be "all in" on it and I don't want that either. I'm just happy if we are highly selective and fill our needs with talent and depth when the needs arise.
Personally, I can live with that...

If Clemson was bringing in 20+ recruits for next year, I don't think as much attention would be paid to the portal as there seems to be right now.
Easy to forget that this team is on the younger side. Definitely seeing progress with being in the mix with the FIU wideout and the Purdue edge rusher, and that's only what is public. Wouldn't be surprised if there are more in the works.

A few cursory attempts to contact transfer portal players or perhaps even having one in for a visit doesn't change my mind.
Dabo told us that he has never failed at anything, so given his lack of success in the transfer portal, I find it hard to believe that he's giving it his all.

He works his tail off to make us better, including being an early adopter of the transfer portal and NIL, and being enthusiastic about them.
Along with improved facilities and administrative support, the portal and NIL have allowed us to improve our program, upgrade our talent level, and have historic seasons like we did last year.
As you know, our men's basketball program doesn't have nearly the advantages our football program has, yet Brownell has taken us to new heights as a program.
Meanwhile, Dabo has managed to do less with more for several years running. It's sad to see.

It doesn't really tell me anything objectively. Stating that 15 teams ranked above Clemson used the transfer portal to which 11 of them made the CFP to support the theory that transfer portal use leads to improved team success is biased given that there are 100+ teams below Clemson that also used the transfer portal and did not make the CFP.

since the current transfer portal went into effect several years ago.
We have been passed by programs which we had been superior to (and in some cases, far superior to).
I’m not suggesting that our lack of transfer portal uses is the only reason for this. However, it can’t be chalked up to coincidence either.
I think it’s pretty obvious that we could’ve added some quality talent to our roster via the transfer portal.

Well that’s a different argument when we shift from whether transfer portal use impacts team success to whether we could have added a quality transfer to improve our team talent. Given our roster is still top 10 in talent per 247sports and the presence of nil these days though, it’s hard to see who we could have added and whether it was feasible.
Personally, I’m of the opinion that the level of execution (scheme and player) rather than roster talent is more the reason why we do not see the same level of quality play compared to a few years ago.

we would've signed a meaningful player from it by now.
He wouldn't have made public comments about valuing commitment and wishing that players still had to sit out a year before transferring.
He also wouldn't have gone out of his way to make snarky remarks about how our transfer portal is in our locker room, and we signed a bunch of "transfers" from high school.
He also wouldn't have assistant coaches who called players in the transfer portal quitters (glad that tweet was removed quickly!).
He like to be aw-shucks-y and say "they have to want us too." Well, why would they want us when we've earned the title of being anti-portal at Clemson?

Dabo doesn’t need 75% of his roster to be transfer players like Brownlee. Dabo gets players who love Clemson and want to stay. He also wins championships unlike Brownlee. I love how people try and make a championship season that Clemson makes the CFP a bad year.

It certainly wasn't. We won our conference and got an automatic bid to the new 12 team CFP.
That's very good.
But let's not be fooled, we are still a long way from being an elite program. That's disappointing, since I assume our goal is to be an elite program again.
If it's not, then why are we paying our head coach the #2 highest salary and our assistant coaches the #3 highest salary?!?

find himself carefully perusing it to see if someone can fill a need while also fitting into the type of player he wants. To me that would be the smart move.
Regardless, by hook, crook, beg, borrow, steal, luck, and wins, we find ourselves in another CFP. Something to think about, I'd suggest: the ONLY team out of 12 thus far not using the portal. Makes me muse how sweet it would be were we to go all the way. Imagine the discussions then about Dabo Swinney's philosophy!

of improving our roster in short order to address holes in the roster that occur as a result of injury or attrition.
Not using the portal makes it appear that Dabo views our roster as being as good as it can be, which is laughable.
I would love for us to be able to have an elite roster filled exclusively with players who were recruited by us out of high school, but I just don't think that's realistic. The last few years of disappointing returns and always being a "young" team suggest that Dabo has been too idealistic about this.
I'd love to see us go on a deep playoff run, although my concern would be that Dabo would use it as "evidence" that what he's doing is working perfectly. If we have one really good year out of several (i.e., temporary success), how does that make us any better than teams that do the same thing using the transfer portal?

For everyone who is downvoting this, for the last 4 seasons Judge is right. We will see if this year is different, but there is no way we can’t land a big name in the portal for positions we need depth other than Dabo doesn’t want to. We have the resources and Dabo just said nobody will have more money to give than Clemson next season, so what’s the problem?

Most players in the portal aren't as good as the players we already have... AND... they are in the portal for a reason. Most can't start where they are... some are selfish and not the type that will enhance your team culture...
The portal is good for "have nots" in CFB... it's not that great for schools like US who normally get good recruits and have the staff and facilities to develop players...
The occassional "bidding war" over a top player isn't something we should be interested in...

Every other program has improved their roster with transfers, including other CFP participants who have consistently signed top 5-10 recruiting classes. Oregon is starting a transfer QB. So are Texas, Ohio State and others. UGA went 41-2 between 2021-23 with two titles and they added portal talent this offseason, with two scoring TDs against us in the opener. All know there is significant value and actively look to upgrade their rosters through any available talent pool.
But if it makes you feel better or more superior as a fan to say that Clemson isn’t in a “bidding war,” so be it.

That should be clear from what he has said the last few years, going out of his way to talk about how he doesn't like to use it, he considers us a developmental program, he prefers to promote from within our roster, he values loyalty, etc.
I think we are seeing him use it - reluctantly - because he is slowly realizing that his way isn't working well enough. Good for him! Better late than never.

The reality is most coaches don’t want too bc you have to deal with NIL as well that’s why we see all these coaches leaving to be coordinators or assistants so they don’t have to worry about it. But it’s just part of the game now

You’re not wrong. We’ve lost so many players to the portal since 2021 adding three doesn’t plug the d a m. It’s a decent start. Adding 10 bonafide contributors would be a good start. Four losses two years in a row don’t lie. We’ve lost as many games since 2021 as the previous decade. Actually one more!

So are you saying we should:
A) Go ahead and fill our roster to 105 in the event the court ruling goes into effect this year but then have to cut 20 players this Summer if we don't.
Or
B) Cut 10+ players from our team now then add 10 players to keep numbers close to 85
To me either choice would reflect poorly on our program
