This idea of having 3 permanent conference

Jan 27, 2022, 1:26 PM

opponents and playing the other 10 over the course of 2 years is a good one. Guarantees you play everyone once in a 2 year period and have a home and away with everyone over a 4 year period. Much better than current division crap. Top 2 finishers play in Conference Champ game ( if those remain much longer)? I like Clemson having GT, FSU, and NCSU as permanent 3.
Cant believe this wasn't thought of before.

Why is it a good idea to have three permanent opponents instead of playing a full up round robin schedule? How does that make any sense? It is fair for GT to play Clemson and FSU every year instead of Duke and UVA? Its silly at best. If you want to change (which I do) the system dont go from one flawed system to another.

Just my opinion. Obviously you dont agree, which is fine.

Jan 27, 2022, 1:52 PM [ in reply to Re: This idea of having 3 permanent conference ]

GT doesn’t necessarily have to play Clemson and FSU each year. Clemson is their only permanent listed in my example above. The other 2 spots are open for any number of combinations.

How can you have a round robin system with 15-16 teams in the league?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Easy - you play 14 or 15 conference games***

Ga Tech's annual 3 would almost certainly include Duke. That rivalry goes way back, way back, and Duke largely considers them a must-schedule in football. Ga Tech would likely see us, Duke, and maybe Louisville (proximity and I-75).

if everyone had to have three

Jan 27, 2022, 4:10 PM

you would certainly end up with some clunky ones just by default. Like the way that Lousville and Virginia are permanent cross-division rivals now. Like who would FSU have as their third after us and Miami?

Syracuse. North / south extremes and it allows them, and BC with Miami, to play in Florida and help with recruiting.

Meh, eliminate the permanent opponents. We'll still be fired up to play FSU or GT when we see they every other year. With that said, 3 is better than the current divisional set up. Only playing some teams once every 6-8 years is just plain dumb.

Re: This idea of having 3 permanent conference

Jan 27, 2022, 2:34 PM

What is funny is that most permanent opponents for most schools would likely be some of the closest in proximity. So why stop there? I mean UNC will play Duke, NCSU and Virginia - so why cast out Wake? There are already committing to those game as OOC. We would always want to play Wake, GT, FSU... and UNC as much as possible. NCSU , Dook, too. Even Pitt BC ans Cuse would want to play a odd northern grouping.

Not bad, but I would just like having seven permanent opponents - all southern.

NC schools and South. Virginia Schools and Nawth. It might actually give UVA an easier path.

The only "loser" is the UNC/UVA game but that can always continue as an OOC or similar game. Maybe the VT or Pitt vs Miami - BC or Clemson, VT vs the NC schools, who else cares about the oddball matchups?

It was better when you played everyone in once football and twice in hoops each year. Really dislike this mega conference junk. Right upper there with NIL and Portal as complete garbage

Dump Syracuse, Boston College and Miami

Screw USuCk and schedule 2 Name Games and no cupcakes, 3 if there's no ACC title game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have it from a pretty good source that the ACC did discuss

Jan 27, 2022, 3:48 PM

this type of format around the time that Syracuse and Pitt were added, and some since. The biggest stumbling block was us and FSU actually, who feared that, with the new CFP format, one or the other, or both, could get eliminated in a ACCCG rematch, whereas without a rematch a 1-loss us or them could still get in if one went undefeated and beat a lesser team from the Coastal, and the other sat idle.

Fortunately, our divisionless format in 2020 that featured a ND/Clemson rematch, where both made it into the CFP following, has helped dispel that concern as we look forward.

I could do with less crappy ACC games.

I could do with less crappy ACC games. I don't care about Boston College.

I like their city. But their football team is bad.

Hey man, give BC a chance. They were pretty good with Matty Ice at QB. They had Clemson on the ropes a couple of years ago until DJ bailed us out. They'll sort things out in time. Let's face it, FSU and Miami's been pretty bad the last few years...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd like playing everyone & then next year a different slate

Jan 27, 2022, 4:06 PM

with a state school payout, then the Lovers of C0 ck every year. I dunno, I like variety. I do like GT being a rival and of course, FSU gets eyeballs even if one of the teams isn't so good.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It wasn’t thought of because it’s mathematically impossible

Jan 27, 2022, 4:13 PM

With 15 teams. You’d need to add a team with ND or keep having ND be out of conference, with no hope of them joining) And then you’d essentially have 4 pods who play round robin and then you’d play 5 of the 12 other teams each year meaning you still wouldn’t accomplish your goal of playing everyone every other year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It wasn’t thought of because it’s mathematically impossible

Jan 27, 2022, 4:21 PM

It's not mathematically impossible at all. There are 14 teams. You play 3 every year. That leaves 10 (since you don't play yourself). There are 8 conference games, so you play half of those 10 one year, half the next year, then repeat but flip-flop the home team. Mathematically perfect.

Notre Dame can remain on the schedules as an out-of-conference game just like they are today without impacting the math above one bit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right, but if the goal is to have ND

Jan 27, 2022, 4:24 PM

Join once the OOC agreement is up in 2025 or whenever, you’re essentially setting all this up for like 3 year before you change it again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Right, but if the goal is to have ND

Jan 27, 2022, 4:28 PM

Then you could add a conference game. With 15 teams, you could play 4 permanently, rotate the other 5, and play 9 instead of 8 conference games.
Once you get up to 16 teams, the model starts to break down as I don't think any conference would go to 10 games.

Re: Right, but if the goal is to have ND

Jan 27, 2022, 4:31 PM [ in reply to Right, but if the goal is to have ND ]

And the agreement with Notre Dame is through 2036, by the way. The 2025 timeline you are thinking about is their TV contract with NBC, but that doesn't impact their ACC agreement.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up
