Roster limits thru the lense of a walk-on tennis player.

Friends' kid just wrapped up their first season on a D1 tennis team up in North Carolina. They were offered a walk-on spot with the understanding they'd compete for a spot in top 7.
They failed to play into that role and instead spent most of the season on the bench, only occasionally standing in to play doubles when #6 or #7 went down with injury.
End of the season comes and the coaches inform this kid that, due to the NCAA lawsuit affecting roster limits, that they probably won't have a place on the team in the fall.
"We have 10 scholarship spots," they told the kid. "And we expect to have all 10 spots filled by the summer." The elephant in the room being this kid is not one of the 10 ...
So, fine -- it seems this kid's tennis career has come to a close and they should be very proud of all they accomplished in the sport.
It's the death of the walk-on, which of course goes to the heart of the American dream.
But it's what the kids wanted when they sued for NIL. Now they've got it. Sports is now just a business. And kids like this one are going to get it good and hard.

I love tennis and in todays environment so many schools are cutting it. It concerns me about the future because it is a good life sport. All my grandkids and kid have played. I hope the person in the OP gets a chance somewhere

Many schools will have to drop non-revenue sports and they have to invest dollars to field teams into revenue sports. Its the slippery slope of what is getting steeper and steeper as more money is being injected into the hands of laughably "Student Athletes".

Amateurism in college football and basketball is completely dead.

Major college players have always been paid

Now the players will actually get paid legally. Besides, every kid who was above average on their HS team wants a D1 scholarship, no matter what the sport. The competition is very high.

I think "legally" is still probably a stretch in many cases.
