I've noticed this when reading some books to my two year old...

Is it "dived" or "dove".

past tense for dive, like diving into the water.

you guys know words are my second language...I say dove.

"The mermaid dove beneath the wave" not "The mermaid dived beneath the wave"

Quick Summary on Dived and Dove

Dived and dove are both correct past tense forms of the word dive. Dove is more common in North America, while dived is more prevalent among British English speakers.
○ She dived into the icy cold water.
○ She dove into the icy cold water.
However, dived is the only acceptable past participle of dive.
○ He had dived into the lake a few days ago.
The past tense of compound verbs like skydive and nosedive is always “–dived.”
○ I skydived on my birthday.
○ Stocks have nosedived.

Dived and dove are both accepted past-tense forms of the verb to dive. Dove is used more frequently in the United States and Canada; dived is more common outside North America. The word usually means plunging into water, but don't forget about its figurative uses.

RH Tig, when a dive bar closes due to corporatocracy, do you say "Man, I sure miss that dived", or do you say "That dove was great, real shame what happened there"?
