Can we stop all the BV praise now?

Jan 2, 2021, 8:20 AM

LSU 628 yards
OSU 639 yards

The secondary sucks
The LB play is average
The D line is weak

I have said it before, but of course I am a coot.

I don’t see why we can’t acknowledge him as an excellent defensive coordinator

Jan 2, 2021, 8:24 AM

who has done an outstanding job here, but who is still human and certainly not perfect.

Our defense has let us down several times the last few years, but those instances are few and far between. I think it’s worth asking why, but I think it’s unfair to assume that it’s solely Venables’s fault.

Exactly! Even the great Alabama with all their number one recruiting classes has has been giving up a lot of points and yards. All the rules benefit offense. Look at the points and the yards Florida put on Alabama in the SEC championship game. And Trask is not a great quarterback. I read some reviews about his NFL prospects and teams are not excited about him at all. And he sucked without his top three wide receivers in Florida‘s bowl game. Trevor Lawrence did what he did all year missing his top four wide receivers from last year.

But I think we need to look at the players and realize last year especially and this year we just do not have the talent and the depth on defense that we have had in the past. But we still made it to the playoffs. Recruiting is better than ever and these things will get fixed. But people have unrealistic expectations.

I do think the very best teams are adjusting however to some of the things Venables does and we’re going to have to start getting our guys lined up sooner. But Brett Venables is the best in college football and he will adjust!

No. You can. Losing isn't always about what we don't do. Ohio State played better on both sides of the ball. LSU was a rare offensive juggernaut. We didn't play our best. It would have required that last night as OSU played exceptionally well. Who you want? Too bad Muschamp isn't available.

I won't call you a name, but I'm sorry, this doesn't make sense. How long has Venables been here - and two games define his tenure in your mind?

I will say that our defense was, in my opinion, a little suspect all year. The secondary in particular was puzzling. Occasionally good, often totally out of position.

Your not a coot. You just have realistic expectations that don't fall in line with 99.99% of the people on TigerNet.
Now if you think we should fire Brent and hire Will Muschamp ,well then you might be a coot.

Everyone here is calling out the OP, and rightfully so. But I believe there is a small question to be asked.

BV dominates the ACC where our talent is superior. What can he do to adjust so that our D can perform better against elite offenses where our talent level is not dominant ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Can we stop all the BV praise now?

Jan 2, 2021, 11:47 AM

What is your definition of elite? He beat Bama with Tua, considered one of the best offenses ever at the time. He shut out an Urban Meyer team that had never been shut out. He beat an Oklahoma team with a Heisman trophy QB.

He had a bad game in the National Championship last year, and in the playoff this year.

He has already proven that he can match up against elite offenses. Nobody wins every game every year. He’s as good as any DC in the country.

What elite offenses have Alabama and Ohio State shut down this year?

Re: Can we stop all the BV praise now?

Jan 2, 2021, 7:32 PM

You make a good point, but even some of our wins in the CFP have included significant yardage against our D - OSU last year and Bama in 2015 & 2016.

If we look at all of our stats from the CFP, how does that compare to regular season stats. I understand that better teams should do better against us, but this is the standard going forward. We need to adjust our thinking to compete with the elite.

I am really not knocking BV, but the bar has been raised and we need to try to rise to that level of challenge.

Re: Can we stop all the BV praise now?

Jan 3, 2021, 3:38 AM

I was curious, so I looked up the yardage allowed in each of or playoff games. Outside of the last 2 years his defenses have done pretty well against the best teams. The last 3 years have been a downward trend, but we knew that our defense was worse in 2019 and 2020. And it’s not like those other defenses of the elite teams didn’t struggle against us either, we had over 400 yards in every game except against Alabama in 2017, and against LSU in 2019.

2015

Oklahoma - 378
Alabama - 473

2016

Ohio State - 215
Alabama - 376

2017

Alabama - 261

2018

Notre Dame - 248
Alabama - 443

2019

Ohio State - 516
LSU - 628

2020

Ohio State - 639

We dominated the CFP in 2018

Jan 3, 2021, 11:19 AM [ in reply to Re: Can we stop all the BV praise now? ]

We have a lot of youth on the line. We weren’t able to handle an OL like OSU this year.

We had 2 freshmen starting on the DL this year. We were thin at LB (lots of young talent as well)

Venables is considered the best DC in college football for a reason. His defense isn’t easy to execute. It can be risky at times. It works

In order for you to find a collegiate defensive coordinator who hasnt has his defense shredded at least a couple of times over the last two seasons you'll need to go to the unemployment office because literally every one of them who is employed has had it happen.

Re: Can we stop all the BV praise now?

Jan 3, 2021, 11:06 AM

No Considering he had two true freshman and one true sophomore starting on d-line and tons of back end injuries and loses key guys like Turner and Skalski. I think the future looks great. With the o-line so inexperienced and d-line so young and losing key guys from defense to graduation most programs would have had a “rebuilding “ year and we went to the playoffs. Chill out and enjoy the journey.

Jan 3, 2021, 11:14 AM

I am disappointed in our defense as well, and I think some changes need to be made, but its not all on BV. But you have to remember, Our defense is very young, but also very promising. we also have a 5 star LB coming in that they are moving to safety. so we have help coming there as well. Booth has shown flashes of brilliance at times and I think he is going to be a stud. We are going to be fine.

Offensive line is where I am really concerned. we just don't seem physical or nasty enough. hopefully tristan leigh will come in and be able to help
