I mean, from what was explained to me I could totally understand putting the HVAC in the attic. From a plumbing standpoint, it's a lot easier not to have the HVAC stuff going under the house to wade through if you have pipe repairs/replacements.
That said, I love learning about this stuff so anyone else with a more comprehensive breakdown of which typically works best I'm all ears.

Same here. Leaks are easy to patch in the crawlspace, but near impossible

But let's snub Benga because that's exactly the type of rich guy shenanigans I want to get into.

What sucks is having the water heater in the attic though. Pilot light went out two days ago, getting into the attic and reigniting it was a sauna. Took a warm shower yesterday since the attic kept the hot water heater hot enough to do so lol.
Upstairs HVAC unit is in the attic and the condensate drainline comes out right where the stairs of the deck are and has made a mud pit at the base of the stairs, my project this week is to get into the crawl space and do some plumbing work to reroute it out under the deck so I can grow mosquitos there it seems.

I did this as a summer job in high school. I feel for those guys.

Installing AC units in the summer heat in South Carolina... whooboy.
It was a helluva job, and yeah, 130-140 degrees in the attic was common. We would only be able to stay up there for 10min at a time before we would have to come down to catch our breaths. And hauling those HVAC units up into the attics....good gosh. It would take 3 of us busting our ##### to get those behemoths up there. You're also wearing jeans and long sleeves up there to guard against the insulation, but then you'd still have to come home and take a hot-as-balls shower because you'd be covered in fiberglass regardless. (Hot showers open your pores and help the fiberglass get outta there.)
There was one day when I swear I played out a Looney Toons scene right in front of my buddies. We were working in a house that had a tin roof, and I stood up and had one of those, "Hey, y'all smell something cooking?" moments before I realized that the tiny little hair swirl on the top of my head was barely touching the tin roof. I smelled the burn before I felt it.
Later that day, it was so freaking hot that a thunderstorm opened up and it started hailing. We ran outside and stood in the hail. Getting pelted with ice marbles never felt so good.
That job convinced me more than anything that going to college (and eventually getting a better job) was the absolute right thing to do.
