Blake Miller

I just finished rewatching the entire GT game and every offensive play for Miller. He played a much better game than I thought. There were a couple of times his footwork got him in trouble and a couple of times he got beat inside on stunts/twists.
For most of the first half he played great, but the last GT series they started stunting against him and I think it surprised him. After getting beat a couple of times on it, he figured it out.
I saw at least 3 pancake blocks he made.
His main technical problem that I saw was at the snap he sometimes steps to his left and often turns too far to his right. He's trying to get into position to push the DE out of the pocket, but when he rotates too far, he alows the DE to get around him. It didn't happen many times, but it's something he needs to clean up.
I don't know if he can gain any speed (probably not) or reaction quickness, but quick speed rushers will cause problems for him and require some TE help - which we gave him on some plays.
I suspect he'll look a lot better tomorrow.

He didn't do that often, but a couple of times it was obvious and it cost him.

I think that was probably just an old habit. He played LT in HS and they moved him to RT @ CU. His reaction was to jab left like a LT would IMO but I may be wrong. My son is an OL, he's our swiss army knife, he can and has played each OL spot over the 6 yrs in our program and the thing he noticed was his footwork being a little slow and sometimes he stopped moving his feet altogether. He'll be fine and get better. I'm sure it's one of those deals where you see what's happening but your brain takes a second to realize.

What is your analysis of OL play in the first game as a whole and as the interior?

I watched his interview, and he seems pretty sharp. I think he will get better with more experience. The next two games should help.

Agreed - and I think he got more criticism than he deserved - particularly since it was his first game - and I think he took responsibility for more than he needed to do. So, to me that shows that he's cachable and can/will learn.

I appreciate the analysis. OL play fascinates me but I admittedly don’t know the technical side of it (feels like only OL and OL coaches do?).

I'm no expert ny any means, but did play some TE about 60 years ago.... Times (and some blocking techniques) have changed.

Like other positions there are a ton of little things that add up to make a great linemen.

Kind of a shame more people can't offer that same grace to our starting QB.

Big difference between a player’s 1st game and his 16th. That said, agree DJ deserves a fair shake. In the end, though, my opinion is just that. I trust Dabo and company to make the right call.

And he's 12-4 so far as a starter. First loss as a starter was to ND where he played an incredible game. Second loss was to the team who wound up winning the National Championship, third loss in OT at NCS and then 10 pts to a pretty good Pitt team.
Now, I totally agree he needs to play a lot better and if he doesn't, this is going to shake out pretty quickly but in a world based on "wins" his record should buy him some time. If Cade gets more snaps and continues to play well and DJ continues to struggle, the decision will become pretty easy from there. My guess is the WF or NCS game is where the rubber will meet the road.

Agreed, but one series in the first game doesn't mean you toss the keys to the Freshman just yet either but his time is probably coming sooner rather than later if DJ doesn't improve over the next couple of games.

That is a good analysis. Unfortunately for the OL, you only get attention when things go wrong. In the brief things I saw, we tended to run to the L side of the line when we really needed a play. Did Miller and Parks open up some holes? How did they look? I have to admit that I was expecting a better running game against GT, and I hope it develops during these next two games. Our line needs to be solid when we face Wake.

The first running play of the game was called over Miller. It wasn't very successful, but he did make some good blocks during the game. We had more success over the left side and on some of those plays, Miller ignored the TE and went to the second level on a LB - which he was supposed to do.
Like most OTs, he's a little slow, but if he engages, there's a high probability the defender is going to be flattened.

Slow compared to skill positions maybe. He’s a great athlete for a freshman college tackle.

Always agree with your O-Line assessment TigerDominance®
We need more like him, from across the nation. We can't just keep scraping the backyard...Big 10 bottom tier teams have bigger average (across the boards) O Line men.
I might be wrong but some turd has the time to look it up and call me out.

He had a fine game against a Furman.

The huge hole opened for Shipley’s second score came through Miller and Parks on the right side.
And DJ stayed upright and had time on 99% of his pass attempts.
The O Line did good against Furman, particularly in the first half when we were focused and not doing a bunch of subbing in and out.

Good observations and I agree. Now imagine his coaches (who know a lot more than you and I) observing similar, and a lot more, things then COACHING him on how to improve!
He's big, strong, talented, humble and takes coaching well. We all need to remember he's a true freshman. Also, most people underestimate how much "thinking and reacting" an OL needs to do during a game. He just needs good coaching and experience and he will be just fine.

It looked like one of pressure/sacks where he didn't touch anyone that he was expecting help behind him. For a first ever game and a true freshman... I can definitely see why they want him on the field.
I expect our first drive will be a heavy dose of running. And maybe a shot downfield in a 2nd and short. Jmo

At least twice the DE moved upfield and Miller managed to keep him pushed out of the pocket only to have DJ rollout/scramble directly into where the DE was blocked. Not sure that was Miller’s fault.

GT was mostly determined to stop the run and deep passes and make DJ beat them with underneath throws. So when the first receiver wasn't open, DJ appeared (first half at least) to panic with his happy feet and that also caused some bad series, add add Miller's first start, it made it look a little worse with his missed blocks. This is what worries me heading into the rest season and I would love to see this change for DJ and the rest of the offense. If not then we don't need the coaches to tell us what our eyes saw the other night with Klubnik one series or not the Dude is a baller and sees the field so much better.
