UGA and the Portal Talk

Jan 1, 2023, 9:01 AM

UGA uses the portal less than Clemson so I’m not sure people are doing their research when they say we need to use the portal like O310, the Coots, UGA and SoCal. All those players are homegrown recruits for the Dawgs. Recruiting and Coaching is a much bigger problem than the portal. Doesn’t matter if we get a great OL or WR in the portal. Who’s coaching them up? People may say DJ set us back but the Streeter and Goodwin experiments have far more impacts long term. It’s going to be a while to get back to being elite if nothing changes.

Uga has more money to buy the recruits than CU. I do think changes should take place but doubt they will happen. We need to face it NIL will be the reason we get left behind in the future if something is not done.

They have entered the game now like Alabama. Cherry picking the top available at positions of need. They have 2 WR signed now from the portal.

They cherry pick the portal and land 25+ studs each year. For an example of how cutthroat their staff is, they tried to land Caleb Williams in the off-season with their starting qb returning from a national championship team. Best seems to be the standard there.

It is truly amazing how great the coaches are when they have the talent to work with as I saw yesterday!

There is an old saying.... you can’t make silk from a sows ear. Great players make a good coach into a great one.

Clemson is being out recruited in the receivers department.

We signed 11 players from Georgia this year and have a Top 10 class. Our coordinators did not recruit most the players they coach so will it take a couple of years for us to get better? The Portal only a few guys that are difference makers and even getting 1 is a home run in recruiting. Our roster is not in need of 10 Portal guys like some schools but wow, a couple could help.

We are in need of 10 portal guys. Doesn’t mean they all need to be starters, but we need to supplement our roster as well. We’re not recruiting enough guys to fill what we lose each year (graduation, NFL, or portal) and are putting ourselves at a disadvantage, almost like self imposed sanctions. Again, don’t all have to be starters, but we still need depth.

I can’t speak for everyone but

To me it’s not about our use (or not) as compared to other programs. Nor do I have any strong opinions on whether we should have already used it more or any specific situations.

To me it’s the idea that “we do not use the portal” as some policy or standard. I just don’t think you can take a stance like that. I also realize we have already used the portal. So I think if/when a need can be met there in the coaches’ view then we will use it.
