To submarine the prosecution’s case?
Because if he's not, then he sure is acting like it
This “poor guy” is now going to be hated by almost 100% of the country
Traitor to one half, and bumbling star witness to the other half…
Stepping back, I think everyone would agree that Michael Cohen would say or do most anything to save his own skin. Lie, cheat, or steal.
But, before everyone throws this all on top of him, I'll say this - that many of us wouldn't act so differently if we were put in the same tight spot he found himself in.
Doesn't excuse his actions, but once he got there he sure faced a mean squeeze.

He's a crappy witness because he's as big a crook as Trump. The prosecution knew that going in.

Of stealing from the Trump Org
Getting caught by the defense on cross examination without introducing it first on direct is a cardinal sin for a prosecutor
It's obvious that Cohen lied about it, because Bragg isn't dumb enough let something like that go.

- - - didn’t charge him because they wanted a ‘credible’ witness to use in a potential fraud suit against Trump. Former SDNY prosecutor Mr. ‘Fifth Amendment’ Mark Pomerantz (wanted to keep Cohen from being prosecuted for this Cohen / theft deed because SDNY needed to ‘keep Cohen clean’ … unbelievable, yet there it was.
As we all know, DA Alvin Bragg refused to bring forward the Trump / hush money case back when Pomerantz was one of his assistants. Pomerantz, along with then-assistant DA Carey Dunne (both of whom also worked under Bragg’s predecessor, former SDNY DA Cyrus Vance). Pomerantz and Dunne resigned from SDNY after Bragg (in his first go round for considering the case) decided that M.Cohen was such a terrible ‘star witness’ that no prosecution of Trump in the alleged hush money (non-crime) crime would be successful.
Subsequently, the Democrat wing of 5he Uniparty realized that LawFare was the best path towards defeating Trump politically; Biden Admin planted Sherlock Get-Trump attorney Matthew Colangelo into SDNY as an ‘assistant’ to A.Bragg. Thus, SDNY had ‘a change of heart’ and decided to go forward with the Trump / hush money suit … with Cohen still being the star witness.
By the time that this latest iteration of the trial got underway, conveniently the Statute of Limitations had run out for prosecuting Cohen regarding his theft of Trump Organization money.
(*). What really matters is the judge (Juan Merchan). He is a Trump hater whose daughter makes big $$$ by raising m9ney for Democrat p9litical candidates. Merchan blocked a key defense witness Brian Smith) who is a legal expert (law professor) in campaign finance; Merchan wants to provide jury instructions regarding Merchan’s own ‘expertise’ in campaign finance (of which Merchan has zero experience) instead of allowing Brian Smith to enlighten the jury about important nuances of campaign finance. (Expert details of campaign finance, if provided to the jury, would obviate any of Judge Merchan’s jury instructions on this topic; thus, Judge Merchan’s last chance of getting a conviction of Trump would disappear.)
(***). So … even though Cohen, as the world’s worst witness, made the prosecution’s case look ridiculous, the Judge’s instructions (which will advise that the jury should not dismiss Cohen’s testimony despite Cohen’s past and present status as an inveterate liar and thief) gives the jury some justification to return with a guilty verdict.
Law and Order in America. OBiden Handlers Administration style.
