For a "traditional" sitcom....

I'd say How I met your Mother is better as it shows some imagination. BBT is more paint by the numbers comedy, which is fine, but doesn't push the format forward. To many (probably most) that doesn't matter, but for me it does. I can enjoy watching BBT, but I would never rank it high on my favorite comedy lists.
Many complain about the laugh track they use and I understand that, but for me the only thing that really kinda bugs me about the show is that they seem to be only capable of telling one joke--Nerds say something or do something nerdy, audience laughs. Repeat. For 6 years.

sitcoms I watch these days are HIMYM, Modern Family, and The Office. I'm only still watching The Office because I want to see how it ends. Sometimes HIMYM gets a bit too real for me.

Depends how you mean "aged"...

it's humor and set-up has been copied by almost every sitcom going today. (Just look at HIMYM and Big Bang) The jokes and look of the show has a firm 90s feel to it which doesn't age well, but I think that's because of the impact the show had on that decade. It kinda defined a large part of how the 90s felt.
