I struck the motherlode in Numbers chpts 10 and 11. In 10 the COI (children of Israel) thought God wasn't present with them when the cloud, evidence of His presence went from the Tabernacle of the Covenant to the road ahead to lead them by day.
In chpt 11 they whined on and on about having only bread/manna to eat and no flesh.
"18 And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.
19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;
20 But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?"
Even Moses asked God to kill him if He didn't do something about all the noise in the camp. God fixed that and relived Mo of the duty to deal with the people though the appointment of 70 mediators between him and the people.

You should read about what the judges appointed in Israel did.

and crucial to the getting wisdom and understanding, what is the gold you found in Num. 10-11? Maybe something like "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it"? Or is it simply an object lesson about how things turn out when you complain to God about what He has determined is best your you today?

The spirit which makes us whine enters as faith in God is lost. Faith is our one obligation which we must do with only God's urging us to trust in Him and trust Him. God works out the rest of our duties without our help. 'For it is God who works in us both to will and do His good pleasure.
In fact, the only way to confound God is to fail to trust Him. In doing so we declare Him unfaithful. That's a fearful sin which He brings to my attention by giving me that which I need and seeming ignoring what I'm asking for. At times I'm so ashamed I hate facing Him. As punishment He reminds me that He loved me so much that He suffered at Calvary for my sin, the very doubt I exercised.
BTW, I know this is the wrong bored.
