Wiggins may have saved this game for us

Bear with me here. 2:29 to go in the first half. Our last 5 possessions were 4 missed 3 pointers and a turnover. 8 point lead had dropped to 4 points. Instead of continuing to pump up 3 pointers, Wiggins took a very smooth 2 point shot, drew a foul, and completed the conventional 3 point play. Then he gets a defensive rebound and goes coast-to-coast for a contested layup on the next possession. Thank goodness we were playing great defense during this time as well and we were right back to a 9 point lead. This resulted in a 3 minute scoring drought instead of a longer one.
After Tuesday night, I was critical of Wiggins for spending too much time standing at the 3 point line with his hands out, waiting for a pass so he could shoot a 3. Today was a lot different and his play during that stretch near the end of the first half is exactly what we need to do when the 3 pointers go cold. Great job by him today.

Agreed, as someone who does not dig into the possession by possession details, I appreciate this detail. I felt that Wiggins really dialed in on his midrange game late first half. It’s his bread and butter. Thought when coach pulled him it helped his collect himself. We needed that production.

then he takes that soft, slightly fading-away jump shot ... it is a great weapon

in foul trouble. When he's at 3 he's not in the paint much by design. His mid range game has greatly improved. I think people get frustrated with him as the talent is there, but consistency is not. But 3 of the last 4 games he's been very good. His lone mediocre one was on the road.

I agree. It just drives me crazy when I see a player standing flat footed at the 3 point line waiting for a pass to come to him. That’s what I saw from him Tuesday. His little fade away jumper just inside the foul line was great and the timing was perfect because we were going cold from downtown. I’ve seen a lot of games where we just kept putting up the 3s in that situation and the game gets away from us.

And he has a very good 3 point shot, but he is streaky and it’s great to see him make an adjustment when they aren’t falling. Then the confidence returns and the 3s start falling again.

He is one of several that are good at midrange stuff. It needs to more of a weapon for us to make the D not sure of what to defend. Sometimes we get too enamored with 3's.

We did call a timeout right before the first of those 2 shots. I have no idea what was discussed in the huddle but the next 2 possessions were very good.

I think this is Wiggins’ third year at Clemson. If he stays for a fourth year and improves upon this year, then we pay him some money to stay for a fifth year and he improves in that year, I would not be surprised to see him be an absolute stud much like Chase Hunter is right now.
Keep in mind, Chase Hunter was good, but not great couple years ago. Wiggins does have a pretty good upside.
Time will tell.

I've been saying since last year:
Wiggins should NOT shoot 3 points. He is a scorer, not a long distance shooter. He should shoot near the basket and focus on defense and rebounding.
He can excel in those areas.

He’s a much better 3 point shooter than either Schief or PJ Hall. He doesn’t take the ball strong to the basket. His strength is shooting jump shots, both mid and long range.
