THNUDER AND LIGHTING HUH? WE'LL WE HAVE THE...

...3 Amigos!

NU Notes: Watson says I-back rotation back to same

LINCOLN — Now that Nebraska senior Marlon Lucky is healthy, the Huskers are once again utilizing three first-team I-backs as they prepare for their bowl game, offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said Friday.

A toe injury limited Lucky in practice and games throughout November, and even kept him from playing in his final home game Nov. 28 against Colorado. But Lucky has recovered from that nagging ailment, according to Watson.

That means Lucky and sophomores Roy Helu and Quentin Castille will all split carries during the Gator Bowl, the way it was through most of the season.

"(It's) the same as it was before he left," Watson said. "He, Roy and (Castille) are taking reps like they usually do. Nothing any different."

Helu recorded more carries than the other two in Nebraska's final four games and finished the regular season with a team-leading 804 rushing yards. He averaged 6.7 yards per carry.

Lucky has 125 carries for 517 yards. Castille has 88 for 342.

Stingy Tigers

It's a good thing for Nebraska that it has some extra time to gain familiarity with Clemson's talented defense.

Watson said the Tigers' scheme contains some pass coverage aspects and certain blitz packages that the Huskers haven't seen all year.

Clemson boasts the nation's No. 10 passing defense, holding opponents to just 167.3 yards per game. During one stretch of the season, the Tigers held nine consecutive opponents to fewer than 200 yards through the air.

"They've got really good athletes playing at all positions," Watson said. "They're really well-schemed in terms of what they do. A little different style of defense than what we see in our league, but they've had a really good year."

Ganz out of the way

Final exams have kept Watson's game-planning sidekick, quarterback Joe Ganz, from showing up in the film room lately.

It's been a relief, Watson joked Friday.

"He's been too busy with finals, thank God," Watson said. "He hasn't been in my way yet."

But Watson knows the silence won't last. The senior is too invested not to offer up his opinion about how to attack Clemson's defense.

"He will have some suggestions," Watson said. "He already started making them (Friday)."

Nine graduating

Nine Nebraska football players will take part in graduation ceremonies today after practice.

Quarterback Beau Davis, defensive tackle Ty Steinkuhler, defensive end Clayton Sievers, wide receiver Todd Peterson, punter Dan Titchener, holder Jake Wesch, long snapper T.J. O'Leary, receiver Nate Swift and Ganz will all graduate. They're nine of 26 Nebraska student-athletes who'll officially earn their undergraduate degrees today.

Today's practice was purposely scheduled for early this morning to help accommodate the graduating seniors.

Ten Nebraska players, including graduate student and offensive lineman Mike Huff, will have a degree when they compete in the Gator Bowl.
