How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 5, 2022, 10:13 AM

We need a quality RB in the 2023 class ... not a project.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

not looking good. none of the '23 RB offers have committed

Dec 5, 2022, 10:14 AM

to Clemson , but Pace leaving may be a sign that 1 is about to commit.

The way to increase carries for these guys is to actually run 90plays a game. That would be an increase of about 30 plays. That’s additional touches for somebody.

This is exactly right

Dec 6, 2022, 7:51 AM [ in reply to Pace leaving because of playing time. Nothing to do ]

some people will dream up reasons to defend RB recruiting. I don't understand it myself.

It's bad, really bad. No way to spin it.

DE is bad too lately. What does Hall do when others are out recruiting?

Need a grad transfer who doesn’t mind being a depth guy.. maybe 5 touches a game at most barring injuries

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What guy with any ability wants that role?

Dec 6, 2022, 7:38 AM

might was well go with Adams, Thomas and freshmen

Re: How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 5, 2022, 10:15 AM

It'll be pretty hard this year this late in the game, they'll take who they can get maybe, but 2024 they def need to go all in to getting a top 10 RB. Shipley and Mafah both JRs next year, its an absolute must.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The third recruiting cycle saying the same thing....

Dec 6, 2022, 8:01 AM

What if we can't find a quality back next year for the THIRD YEAR IN A ROW?

This simply does not happen at AL, UGA, OHST, and now you can include Michigan.

Re: How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 5, 2022, 10:15 AM

I’m not so sure. With DJ we needed a bulldozer to move a line stacking up and a secondary staying up front.
Cade is going to open that up and subsequently the RPO will open up. I’m not saying another ETN or Shipley wouldn’t be awesome but I think youll see a much better running game next year

Re: How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 6, 2022, 8:38 AM

Excellent point. A change in how we run the offense with a more mobile QB will help the RB's.

Dec 5, 2022, 10:17 AM

"Come on down!" We need a speed back to run the RPO game with our speed QB. He's also an excellent receiver.

Re: How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 5, 2022, 10:18 AM

This is exactly what I've been saying. We weren't going to get all 3 of them back. We needed an immediate impact guy to be the #3 back next year.

Instead, we are one injury away from a walk-on and two low level recruits from having to play significant snaps.

My only hope is that Spiller can land Christopher Johnson. He would provide much needed speed in that room.

Dec 5, 2022, 10:40 AM [ in reply to Re: How you liking that RB depth now ? ]

As much as I would love to see us get another big time guy, I just don’t think the guys that can be immediate impact guys are going to be happy with being #3 on the depth chart. Probably why Pace is leaving. If a guy believes he is an immediate impact guy he’s not going to be happy on the sideline. He’s going to want to make an immediate impact. Our best bet is probably to find a developmental guy that is willing to wait his turn and work his way into being great. Still hoping that may be Keith Adams Jr.

^^ THIS ^^

The portal has changed the game - you have to recruit at two levels now. You have to get some top-flight starters, but then you have to look for high-value backups who are willing to develop until they get their chance to make their contribution.

I am not a Bill Belichek fan but one of the most brilliant things he has done over the years is find great value backups. He didn't spend all of his money on flashy first-stringers - he got high value second-stringers. Then when injuries inevitably happened, the falloff in talent to second-stringers was not as great on his team as it was on other teams. His team stayed steadier through injuries than other teams did. And he could continue to win ball games that way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a poor excuse.

Dec 6, 2022, 8:04 AM [ in reply to Re: How you liking that RB depth now ? ]

Never stopped other big-time programs from signing big-time RBs.

You guys are tripping all over yourselves trying to justify two cycles in a row without an impact recruit.

Its kinda sad really.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 5, 2022, 10:24 AM

Well we can't get qualify RBs for the same reason we just lost Pace. No playing time. What would be your recruiting pitch to a RB who probably won't get on the field in any meaningful way for a year or two? Pace is already here and he decided he would rather be anywhere but here so good luck with that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why does that logic only seem to apply to us?

Dec 5, 2022, 10:44 AM

3* Andrew Paul chose UGA ‘s loaded RB room over Clemson where he could have played some this season. Maybe there’s another element to RB recruits passing us by?

Re: How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 5, 2022, 10:25 AM

The RB offered from Alabama is definitely a project guy. First, he would need to gain 25-30 lbs just to be able to compete at this level. Honestly, his film is just not impressive. Very curious offer. Johnson is reconsidering us. Maybe he comes through.

Re: How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 5, 2022, 10:42 AM

What was issue with film for Haynes? He seems to be ours to lose and has amazing stats. It is quite a bit curious that he is without major offers. I suppose a 180 pound frame could be part of the reason.

Pace didn't have pt due to injury. He would have been used if well. He is still free to leave however

lots on here see no issue at RB.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're on a 12 year run

Dec 6, 2022, 8:58 AM

during which we've had one great RB, ETN. He wasn't a 5 star. The two five stars prior to Shipley we brought in were Bellamy and Bowman, who both were busts. Feaster was a 4 star, decent player. Mafah a 4 star, really good. Pace was a 3 star, I think a good player. The rest, like Gallman, or McDowell were 3 stars who developed. The others like Ellington here before Dabo became head man.

Now that Cade is QB the offense will revert back to being truly QB centered. We'll run it in different ways than with DJ.

Would I love to have a stud freshman willing to bide his time at least 1 year, yes. But the reality is both Ship and Mafah could be here 2 more years as RB's are not drafted as highly as they were 20 years ago. Portal isn't really an option for a talented 3rd stringer. So, until at least one of Ship or Mafah decide to move on, we're looking at a developmental guy.

Now that Bama has moved to a more QB centered offense, and even though they recruit RB extremely well, they had to bring in a transfer to start this year. Those highly recruited guys are extremely fluid. Georgia is an exception. Their offense is not QB centered yet. They still look to pound it. An RB knows he can get carries if he earns them.

As great as ETN was, he was never the center of our offense, TL was. We're now a QB centered offense again. I won't say never, but it would be extremely unusual for us to have 3-4 stud RB's at the same time due to that

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How you liking that RB depth now ?

Dec 6, 2022, 9:14 AM

This is laughable. The OP is demanding we have to have an impact RB that is willing to ride the pine for a year. He doesn't seem to notice all the RB's who have transferred out because of lack of PT.

Dec 6, 2022, 9:47 AM

Not if they are going to sit the bench! These kids don't want to sit. But, at RB the idea that you will get all the carries is absurd in today's football.

BTW, I still love our depth. Keith Adams Jr. showed a really good burst and yards after contact in his limited time in. Looking forward to seeing more of him TBH.

I understand what you are saying OP - But, will a dynamic RB stay is the question and sit behind Mafah and Ship?
