How should a 2nd string QB be improved

With a 5 star QB on the roster playing 2nd team you would think he would get playing time to develop. Cade had a total of 46 passing attempts the entire season. If I had a star QB kid and he was interested in Clemson I'd be concerned.

The problem this past year is that DJ could never build a commanding enough lead to comfortably out our #2 guy in.

It was the team, not just DJ. Look at the Miami game up 24-0 at half. First possession of the second half, DJ throws a perfect seam to Spector who bobbles and drops the pass. We then miss the field goal. Next possession, we move the ball some then DJ throws a pick - though the WR running the deep post is Drew Swinney who should not be on the field with QB1 in the 3rd quarter. Next possession Davis Allen fumbles inside the 10.
We should have been up 34-3 or more after the 3rd quarter then Cade has the entire 4th quarter, but a combination of DJ, his teammates lack of killer instinct, and personnel lead to us coming out of the quarter up 26-3 and we let Miami hang around for no reason.

Yeah, that ###### DJ! Surely Streeter's play calling, the porous defensive backfield and the inability of the offensive line to open holes for the running backs had little to do with that...

DJ, the rest of the team (both offense & defense), and the entire coaching staff were inconsistent throughout the year. Despite there not being much cushion in games, Klubnik should have seen more time in the games than he did (USC game especially).

No other team in the country plays their backups the way we do.

You will never have 5-star QB kid, so you have no reason to be concerned.

was the backup QB was head and shoulders better from a mobility, speed, accuracy and talent perspective. This is rarely the case.

This is a really backwards post. Clemson is well known for playing more players than anyone. We've had backups and third stringers getting legitimate playing time for years.
We've also had Freshman QBs come in, get PT, and make national headlines very regularly. DW4, TL, DJ, and even Cade. Yes, it took until the end of the year, but CK is all over the sports media anytime the Orange Bowl is mentioned.

It's unfortunate that Cade didn't perform well in Week 3

versus La Tech. Great opportunity, up 28 in the 3rd with plenty of live game action ahead against FBS level competition. Two series in, a 3 and 4 and out, a 5.4 QBR - as La Tech scores two TD's alongside to cut it back to 14 with 9:30 to play. Cade's day was then over as DJ came back in to lead us to two more TD's, then went on to his best game as a Tiger vs Wake the next week, then more to follow as we were sweeping through our toughest league stretch of the season.
