Brent Venables response to reporter

Reporter: “You can’t practice the pressure and the tension..”

Brent: “You can’t? Yeah, you can. And I believe it starts with the coaches. If it ain’t a game 7 mentality from the coaches, then it ain’t going to be for the players. If it ain’t the biggest 3rd down you’ve ever had as a coach, then it’s not going to be for the players. I believe in living and dying in that moment. I believe in that atmosphere. And it’s our job to create that environment, create that buy in, create that response, create that sense of urgency and desperation. That’s how you chase excellence.”

Sounds like a young Dabo.

I think their passion played perfectly together! But unfortunately, Dabo doesn't have that Brethren on staff that pushes him or the players. I hoped Allen was that man as the guys have talked about his passion plus I thought Boulware would add the fuel.

Right now I see a team that has the passion of a Prius. Always felt like a Prius just hated being a car because it had to be charged up to work. This team isnt being charged up currently.

He's 26-17 as a head coach , and 0-3 in bowl games.
I love Coach V , but aside from his infectious energy and great relationship with his players his tenure at Oklahoma has been below average and he was squarely fighting for his job at the beginning of this season.
O do wish him continued success , because Clemson will always be indebted to him and Dabo will as well.

Things take time. Brent definitely had to warm up to the position that he is in. And look at him now.
He speaks with conviction, absolute confidence in his role. He is a leader of young men.

They look good now. Mateer is the real deal. And so is that defense. Of course Brent is going to have that sorted out.

Also, Oklahoma is consistently ridden with tough schedules.

I love BV . Don't misunderstand , that wasn't a disparagement . It was an accurate description of his present state as the head coach of the Sooners.

Oklahoma was a mess. 2 previous coaches gutted the program of talent. BV took the team from being score first, score often, cause we don't have a defense, to playing together. He's turning it around. It took a while to turn Clemson around.

Venables entered a far more difficult situation than Dabo. Dabo was 29-19 in his first 4 seasons with 2011 being the breakout season at 10-4. He was 19-15 in his first 34 games.

lol it to Dabo 2-3 years to do anything. Look at the fruits of his labor now! It’s showing the Assistants at Clemson was the driving force. Tony, Scott, and venables ran it and it’s very obvious now

But Lincoln Riley took everything with him to USC from Heisman winner Caleb Williams to the kitchen sink when he left Oklahoma. Venables has been killing it this year, but it just got a lot more challenging with Mateer gone.

He's still working on his HC legacy but I will always believe that he is the best DC to have ever coached in CFB. Should have given him the 11 mil contract instead of the HC.

Give all the credit you wish to Brent Venables but Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence deserve most of the credit. With a decently performing quarterback, we would be 4-0.

They scored the points for sure. I think BV made them better players as well. Or at least his defenses did. I think when TL left he knew the writing was on the wall on offense and got out while the getting was good.

But this programs slide began in 2021 and arguably in 2020 when he was still on staff.
