How many scholarships do we have available?

Jan 4, 2025, 6:25 PM

Are we looking to sign any more high school players in February?

I don’t think so but would love a surprise LB.

We are currently at 86 or 87 scholarships and currently limited to 85. The limit has not been raised to 105 yet. So, not sure what the plans are to bring anyone else in and get back down to 85. I'm sure those that get paid millions will make the correct decisions. It's above my pay grade. HTH

Please make this silly scholarship number talk go away. These kids leave all the time. Not as many at Clemson which is a credit to Dabo, but yes at Clemson too. 2 of them still playing in playoffs. It’s a business, focus within reason, of improving team with portal. Attrition happens whether we add players or not.

Can anyone make sense of this to me?

So I know 105 is coming but not yet...so do we need to get to 85 schollies by May or something like how is that supposed to work?

Just seems wacky to be like - Okay, everyone. You need to be at 85 by X date but keep in mind just a few months later you'll need to get your total roster down to 105.

You have to be at or under the scholarship limit by August…when all the kids are enrolled.

Currently the limit is 85.

The legal settlement changes that, if it’s approved. That settlement removes scholarship limits completely. Instead, roster size limits would be in place. For football, that limit is 105. You can offer as many (or as few) scholarships as you want to your 105 players.

Note - if that goes through, it means we’d have to cut about 30 players from the current roster.

Lots of ways to make the numbers work out. Guy was rated as the top edge and a top 20 ish overall player a couple years ago. Could be a great pick up. At worst, we add depth at a place we need it.

He would be an excellent replacement for Carter

My guess is Dabo will have a quick conversation with Saban and ask him about Jeremiah Alexander.

If Saban says take him, let’s go.

If Saban says pass, I would pass.

He's don't absolutely nothing at the collegiate level. We already have several other LBs with similar production so why should we bring in a guy just because he was a great HS player a few years ago? Alabama whiffs on players just like we do and if this guy was at bum #### state nobody would want him.

Could be position change

2

Jan 4, 2025, 10:37 PM

In high school played DE edge. But Alabama used as LB. Tigers could be offering to go back to Edge. Possibly he is more comfortable there. He could play alongside Woods who he played together with in high school so that synergy could be a benefit that was not available at Alabama. We will see but I would give it a chance as he is one of highest rated players available in portal.

Re: Could be position change

Jan 4, 2025, 11:27 PM

He's played three seasons and appears to have 8 tackles in very limited playing time, which to me is literally the definition of having done nothing at the collegiate level.
Sure he may be better if utilized differently but that's not exactly a high hurdle to get over. And Saban was his coach for two of those years when he barely got onto the field so it's not like the new coach just doesn't like him or something. I mean if we need a LB and have a spot and no other options then I guess we could give him a shot but people talking about him walking in and replacing a starting LB whose gonna get drafted are being way too optimistic based on absolutely nothing other than his HS rankings.

a little more depth at LB than we do. Heck, jeremiah would be 2nd string LB or DE walking in the door..

Re: Jeremiah Alexander

Jan 4, 2025, 11:34 PM

Well,at best, Saban would be able to say he's a hard worker, good attitude, etc because Saban obviously didn't think he was good enough to actually play meaningful snaps the last two seasons he coached him. And maybe Dabo is willing to take a guy who hasn't played much in three years based on Saban saying "heck yeah he's a real gem" even though Saban never wanted him to on the field for him. Having said all of that, if this is some kind of deal to keep PW happy then by all means bring him in and kick the tires.
