An all time favorite of mine. I remember wondering if he would make it since he never played defense at Clemson. Turned out to be a fine player on really good teams.

Clemson had very few players in the NFL, and with only 2 or 3 games broadcast all week, you may rarely get to see a former Clemson player. But, the Cowboys were good and got a lot of air time, so my family always tuned in to see Charlie and the Cowboys play. I was young, but definitely remember him as a QB and WR at Clemson, and while he was a good player, nobody dreamed he would be a pro-bowl Safety in the NFL. He was a heck of an athlete for sure.

I have a very slight allegiance to the Cowboys, but only because of Charlie Waters. I remember going to the Clemson Carolina game in 1969, and Charlie had a cast on his arm. He didn’t play, and Carolina won for the third year in a row. I remember Charlie played in the old college All-Star game, which pitted the reigning Super Bowl champion team against a group of college All-Stars in a preseason matchup. It wasn’t always easy for Charlie, and I remember a game the Cowboys played against the Raiders on a Monday night. I think they had him playing cornerback against Fred Biletnikoff, and he got roasted all night long. They finally found the right position for him, at safety, And he had a fantastic career. One of my favorite memories is of him returning an interception for a touchdown against the Redskins and spiking the ball vehemently. My former boss was from Texas and a huge Cowboys fan, and he told me that Charlie had the nickname cheap shot Charlie. I had never heard that before. And I am still curious about it.

I knew people like him, Wayne Mass, Jimmy Addison

and others, all of whom were there when I was.

I suspect most of our older members at CU in those days knew them, also.

In high school when those guys played. Had their names written all over my book covers (remember them). I was a center so Wayne Mulligan was one of my favorites. Still could name entire starting lineup. Buddy Gore still my favorite player. First to hit 1000 yds in a season. Think he did it in a 10 game season. Back in those days we didn’t have many guys in the pros so guys like Mass and Charlie Waters gave us a sense of pride

I remember number 41 very well. My favorite Tiger is those days. I had the “misfortune” of playing in a pickup basketball game in the old field house with several of the players and I think that Waters was on the team. He was being recruited at the time. I said misfortune because I was robust 5’ 7” 130 pound senior. A fish out of the water!

Charlie and Cliff Harris we’re my two favorite cowboys.
And there will never be another Don Meredith. Best broadcaster ever.

I think Charlie married a Playboy Bunny too.

Me too. I had those old programs memorized and can still list starters and some hometowns!!

Charlie Waters no doubt and I go back farther than that.

I detest the Cowboys, and maybe never moreso than back in

that era, when Roger the Chicken Dodger Staubach was running around. I don't know why I just inherently dislike the Cowboys so much, but I suspect it has something to do with them having the nerve to label themselves as "America's Team". That, and at the time, they had "The Great Stone Face" Tom Landry orchestrating things from the sidelines. I just think a coach ought to show SOME emotion, you know?

I was a Cowboys fan until Coach Landry retired. Saw him show emotion once on tv, they actually replayed it. He jumped straight up about 4” off the ground, didn’t extend his arms or change facial expression at all. Very high strung.

Oh yes, I go back to and remember that era! I was in the same Freshman class in 1966 that Charlie Waters was in as we entered Clemson. He was a highly recruited QB who had broken all kind of SC state passing records in high school. As I remember, he still did well as QB in the Freshman football games.

As we entered our Sophomore year, his presence was highly anticipated as the backup to our starting QB (Jimmy Addison). My memory is a little hazy at that point, but he looked pretty good in a couple of early games as our reserves took the field when the game was under control. He looked good as he picked up large amounts of yardage when he ran the ball, particularly when a passing play broke down. However, it became evident he was extremely hesitant to throw the ball, and whenever he did throw it, he was ineffective. I vaguely remember Addison was injured early in the Georgia game after a couple of early promising drives. Charlie came in, but Georgia took advantage of his inability to throw effectively, and won the game handily. If I remember correctly, he continued to look ineffective as a reserve QB, & ended up sitting on the bench for several games.

I think Coach Howard couldn't stand the fact that such a promising athlete wasn't being used effectively. Then (I think) late in the 1967 season, he surprised the Clemson fans by showing off his incredible skills in the WR role. By his Junior & Senior years, he was our main WR threat and thrilled us with many amazing athletic catches. We weren't surprised that Dallas drafted him, but we were puzzled that they drafted him as a Defensive Back (I don't think he had played the position previously in either high school or college).

He stumbled as a young DB and the Dallas fans were jumping on him. However, Coach Tom Landry stuck by him through his early struggles, and strongly defended him against Dallas fans--saying that Charlie did everything Coach Landry asked of him and that his abilities as Safety would soon be noteworthy. And the rest is history. Charlie Waters always brings me happy memories from both his Clemson and Dallas playing days!

I certainly remember him! I scored what I thought was going to be the winning basket for my dorm team in the intermural championship basketball league game with only five seconds left only to see Charlie score the actual winning basket for his then Fraternity team!
