Went from Aggressive to Soft on Defense

in that transition from Coach V to Wes, which is still weird to me since the whole Wes experiment was due to being under Venables all those years, so you'd think it would be somewhat similar. It's like Wes would draw up a gameplan of what to do and then not follow through with any of it and become extremely conservative with the Defensive play calling. At least getting Allen in here should bring that fire and aggressiveness back to the defense and hopefully get back to getting max potential out of the players instead going backwards. Wes played a style of defense like we lacked talent, and we don't.

Absolutely agree on that. He coached timid and scared, you can't be a coach and play not to lose or worry about making the wrong decision.

When is the last time a Clemson defender laid the wood to somebody and you talked about it weeks later? Been a while.

to rush just three down linemen and then play a soft zone coverage in the secondary, lining-up 10 to 15 yards off the LOS and not jamming the WRs at the line, was infuriating. It's not rocket science. If you don't get pressure on the QB and play a soft zone in the secondary, very few defenses are going to be successful. Given time, a good QB and good WRs will find the holes in the zone.

Tom will have the most talent (on paper) that he's had in 10 years. I was surprised looking at psu recruiting classes. He's used to having to identify those diamonds but what got him at Indiana is a lot like Dabo, the game changed and as Tom developed the talent, they'd get poached. Psu didn't particularly have a star studded class 25 but I doubt Allen recruited very many. So it's exciting to see what he does with top talent. Spring game will be fun.

Teams take on the identity/traits of their coach - no fire or intensity from our D … “learning as you go” doesn’t work ..

Looked to me like we lost some fundamentals, esp setting edges against the run

A lot of wide runs went around the tackle with no edge. Too many gaps left unfilled too often, too.
Its disheartening when every other playoff defense that played Texas shut their run game down.

Everybody keeps going on about fundamentals. The reason our guys are not setting The Edge is because the other teams just eating them with blocks. In the old days you couldn't do that because our guys had the strength and the speed to get through the blocks.

Venables’ aggressive style was sometimes susceptible to the big play against really good quarterbacks and receivers (LSU in the championship game) but were much better against medium and short yardage plays than Goodwin’s more cautious approach. I’d rather give up the occasional big play than die by 1000 cuts giving up 6-12 yards per play. When you almost never have a 3 and out you are always behind the 8 ball field position wise.
