“Bobby Gage (1945-48)
Bobby Gage was one of the finest all-around football players in Clemson history. He played in the two-platoon era and he really had an effect on three platoons because he changed the course of games with his punt and kickoff returns.

Clearly, Gage was a great player for Clemson – and a great athlete in general!
While at Clemson:
According to Legacy.com, Coach Frank Howard gave Bobby Gage a nickname that stayed with him:
“Playing as a freshman along side of returning World War II veterans, Coach Howard began referring to Bobby as "schoolboy" and the name stuck. "Schoolboy Gage" went on to set over 30 records at Clemson, and several held for over 30 years. "Schoolboy" was named MVP of the 1949 Gator Bowl, which capped a perfect season for the Tigers in 1948. Also, in 1948, "Schoolboy" received All State, All South, All Southern and All American honors.”

According to GoUpstate, Gage had a very impressive Clemson career:
“Gage played quarterback for coach Frank Howard's 11-0 team in 1948 that defeated Missouri 24-23 in the Gator Bowl where he was named MVP and later an All-American.
His 3,757 career yards of total offense still ranks among Clemson's top-10 and his 90-yard punt return against N.C. State in 1948, remains the longest punt return for a score ever at Memorial Stadium.
He threw for 2,448 yards and 24 touchdowns over his career, had 10 interceptions, and joins Justin Miller as the only Clemson players to return both a punt and kickoff for a touchdown in their careers.
"Bobby Gage, he could run, he could pass, he did everything," teammate Fred Cone said in a book about Clemson sports history. "He called the plays, he ran the team, he gave everyone confidence."

After Clemson:
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Bobby Gage with the 6th Pick (1st Round) of the 1949 NFL Draft. He played two seasons with the Steelers. The Pocono Record describes Gage’s time in Pittsburgh as follows:
“A first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1949, Gage played both tailback and defensive back for Pittsburgh. He threw for 623 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons. He rushed for 334 yards and six touchdowns on 85 carries.”

“In the penultimate game of the 1949 season, Gage set a franchise record which still stands with a 97-yard run on a fake punt. This run also tied the league record at the time which was held by the Green Bay Packers' Andy Uram. The record stood until 1982, when Tony Dorsett scored from 99 yards out.
Gage retired from football after two seasons to devote more time to his family and his off-season job as an executive at a South Carolina textile firm.”

South Carolina Highway 24 is a 30.7-mile-long state highway that runs from the west end at US 76/US 123 in Westminster to the east end at US 76/US 178/US 29 BUS/SC 81/SC 28 BUS in Anderson, going through Oakway and Townville. SC 24 crosses Lake Hartwell twice on an unnamed bridge and the Calvin Wesley Belcher Bridge. Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther, was from Anderson.
 
Westminster, South Carolina is a quiet little town of 2,400 in Oconee County, South Carolina at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the golden corner of upstate South Carolina near the Georgia border. Westminster was founded in 1874 when the Atlanta and Richmond Airline Railway was completed, which became part of Southern Railway in 1875 when the charter was signed. The town was a water stop for the railway. The historic railroad depot remains a centerpiece for downtown. The town is home of the popular South Carolina Apple Festival, noting Oconee County's legacy as one of the largest apple producing regions in the country. Bennie Cunningham, former Clemson All-American tight end and NFL Super Bowl winner, grew up in Seneca and was a teacher and guidance counselor at West-Oak High School.
