Russia's slow invasion of Ukraine. Putin has been universally condemned for this action, with economic sanctions out the Wazoo, yet he persists in the endeavor. The world economy feels the effects of this too, as the US stock market continues to tumble nearly every day.
In college football, the pundits open the season bashing the lowly ACC, and extolling the virtues of King SEC. Some things never change. But, in the last game of the normal weekend, on a Sunday night, a lowly ACC team rose up, almost in spite of their coaching, and pretty much willed themselves to win, as Florida State at least temporarily bolstered the ACC by defeating LSU 24-23. The FSU defense literally won the game on the last play, by blocking their second PAT attempt of the night, to send all the Corndoggers home with indigestion.
Clemson opens the season with a whole lot of questions on offense. Can DJU bounce back and have the kind of season that we all expected from him in 2021? After all, he had teased us with two terrific outings as spot starter in 2020 when Trevor Lawrence went down with Covid. No one could have foreseen the offensive crash that came in 2021. And, although any offense starts with the triggerman, there was plenty of blame to be assigned elsewhere, on top of DJ's admittedly poor play. That has all been dissected ad nauseum. It's a new dawn.
Clemson has new coordinators, on both sides of the ball. A heartfelt salute to Tony Elliot and Brent Venables, who both got their head coaching careers started with wins this weekend. Now, it is time for the new voices, Brandon Streeter and Wes Goodwin, to begin making their own Clemson history as Offensive and Defensive Coordinators. There is a lot of new and returning talent on defense, if that side of the ball lives up to expectations at all, they will have a great year. The offense will obviously have something to prove, and, there seems to be some quiet confidence around the program, something undefined, but something that says we may be ready to shock the world, and once again live up to a Top 4 ranking, and beyond. Less than 12 hours to go....SPOT THE BALL!
