"Someone with one of the best corners in the nation (in high school) came to me and asked if we’d pay them $800,000 for the player to sign here. I told him he can find another place to play," Saban said
So much for the idea that colleges are not directly involved in NIL.

"I’m not paying a kid a bunch of NIL money before he earns it."
From that, I suppose he would pay it after the player earns it..... that appears to be somewhat of an admission of willingness to break rules intended to separate schools from NIL.

It's kind of naive to think that coaches/schools and NIL's

don't communicate on who they would offer a deal to and how much. Otherwise, the NIL's are doing the recruiting and making the offers and not the coaches. It may be a gray area, but when the money is offered, the NIL does it, not the coaches.

Yes I understand it it happening but the fact Saban talks about it openly just shows what joke it is and nobody is afraid being accused of violateing any rules. Are there any rules that are supposed to apply?
I thought it was originally envisioned that it was not supposed to be used as pay for play to recruit new players, but once the athlete is on the team, then they receive an NIL deal based the value of their NIL being used.

a GREAT point. Why should a kid who has never taken a college snap be worth a ton of money? At least they should have to show that they are worth NIL $$$, money should not just be handed to them as a routine thing before they even enter college. (And, yes, I know money got passed under the table to big name recruits for decades, but not the kind of money we are talking about here.)

because the player controls who he signs with and that is the only time he has leverage?
I understand from the coach's perspective that he wants to pay players based on production, but it's a business for the players, too.
They only have control until they sign.

Nick might have done this but he’s making sure the one’s who have proven it get paid. Nick is very smart about cheating!

Bad thing now they don’t consider it cheating.
I know Dabo, Mack Brown and Nick have spoken up about it.
Do notice that Jimbo has not said anything.

When/how does the university (head coach) tell their NIL

how much a layer is worth, how hard to push it, etc?? After the coach offers, do the NIL swat teams swoop in to entice a player to accept the offer.. Just really weird that the University is not supposed to be involved when that’s the only realistic way that it would work…

Yea it has been a sham all along. The coaches most definitely have to be involved.
I tell you who I need and the boosters make it happen.
