Dabo’s refusal to use the portal to address talent/developmental issues is a problem, but our bigger problem this year is that we've not gotten the right players in recruiting and/or haven’t developed them well. Offensive play calling also leaves a lot to be desired.
With that said, it’s pretty obvious that an OL and a WR from the portal could’ve helped this year.

It didn’t work for Texas A&M either. There is a primary reason that players are in the portal. It’s not because they’re good and not getting enough playing time. Dabo is not against the portal.

It’s definitely done more harm than good for Clemson as it’s helped other teams “close the gap” on us.
It’s changed the college game and Dabo needs to start “playing the game” or we won’t return to “elite” again.

Good recruiting and talent identification works no matter where you find it. Every Top 10 team has a sprinkling of transfer players who fit a need and work within the system. You can't watch a game these days without hearing a name called out and where they transferred from.
What Dabo does works for him and what other top programs do seems to be working for them. Neither has to be right or wrong, it just depends on how good you are at finding the right guys for your team and culture, regardless of where they come from.

My point was that the OP said Dabo was proven right for not using the portal b/c Deion and Jimbo weren't successful. Just pointing out that FSU was successful this year. Again, the use case for Clemson to use the portal is to plug holes and add depth. It's not to rebuild the program - that would make no sense.

Look both sides took this argument to the extreme. Clemson doesn’t need to take 30 guys in the portal every year. They do need to look at a large range of guys in the portal and not just throw up their hands when they don’t get the handful of guys they targeted.
As usually the truth is somewhere in the middle, but we live in a landscape of polarized extremes.

Nobody here in favor of accessing the portal to Clemson's benefit has ever suggested 30 players or even 10 players. 5-6 is the largest # I've seen suggested here and that # would merely offset the annual portal exfil–

The Colorado example is bad. That team made huge improvements in one year. They went from no pulse to winning some and competing with good opponents. Deion would get a solid B or B- for his first year in my estimation. Now, yes he has to start recruiting at a high level to go along with the portal work and flip flop the importance.

I want get credit but I posted that only the upper level players would benefit from NIL and it could cause division in locker rooms. The TP is also bad for CF.
At least Dabo is trying to spread the wealth among his team by selling products online the benefit many players.
If the courts rule in favor or going back several years to award former players who will pay that bill. Those who made big money in the NFL should be excluded. Who knows what some of these crack pot judges will do ???
I am concerned now that Dabo could be headed to Texas. I would not blame him if he left after some of the post I have read.
Is Will Shipley hitting the TP or going for the NFL. I think he would be wise to comeback to Clemson. If he does not make the NFL I am sure Dabo would help him get into coaching. That’s what Feaster should have done.

New recruits are traditionally limited. That's a plus because you can't teach a system to a anyone in 6 months. Even the best QBs struggle early. To effectively use the portal a coach must look at the system a player comes from and find those whose previous system closely resembles his.
Everyone thinks it offers unlimited players with max skill and potential. They also need to be dedicated to the players around them and the team as a whole. Unless a coach recruits such players he can pick and choose transfers by watching film. Think Deon and Jimbo.
A coach who seeks out players who fit with Clemson's character is much, much more selective. I would say of all the top 10 teams in the nation Clemson does much less damage control over player behavior off the field. Thus have we not been shamed for the behavior of our players off the field.
Sitting out one game seemed to do Ship some good.
I agree with Dabo. The opportunity lost by portal preference or use does more damage to the quality of character of a team that it helps on the field.
