Why does Ryan Day struggle to win championships?

He has struggled to win the B1G since last winning it in 2020 with Urban Meyer’s players. Making the National Championship game this season certainly helps to ease the pressure, but even this season he failed to make the B1G Championship game. I fear even a National Championship won’t be enough to cool the seat he is on as it is clear to most experts that boosters had to step in and help him manage his roster.

But I have to wonder how long he’ll remain the 5th highest paid coach in college football when it is clear he struggles to lead on his own.

That is exactly what destroyed Tennessee's program in the '90s. The boosters thought they should selected the starters and wanted control over some of the recruiting since they were laying out a ton of cash.

I agree on both accounts. It has to be because he's had way too many players to continue on and be extremely successful in the NFL. Player development and motivation imo.

1 National Championship/Super Bowl and 7 Conference or Division titles in the 7 years prior to their taking over as the head coach? Because if not, the comparisons are seriously flawed. I’m going to check those stats.

I don't mean you be insulting but you must be young. Landry was the first Cowboy coach and faced a lot of criticism for never being able to win a superbowl after losing the ice bowl, and superbowl 5 (I think it was).
Bowden got so close so many times and I remember people blasting him for never being able to win the big one.
I have more too.

You have used Bowden and Landry as examples

Both built programs and won championships with the teams THEY built. Ryan Day took over program that had won 7 Conference/Division Championships and 1 National Championship in the 7 years prior to his arrival. He has since steadily driven that program into the ground, championship wise.
In other words, you provided examples of coaches who built something out of nothing whereas Ryan Day built nothing out of something.
If you have other examples, you may want to use them, because those two are not very good.

Says the guy who started a thread about Ryan Day not winning a natty on the day he in fact did.
I'm not Day or OSU fan but you have no idea what it takes to win it all. Which was my point about Landry and Bowden. A lot of young uns in Alabama don't remember the Bear. How's bama doing btw? Oklahoma? etc...
Again, you must be real young and can't appreciate what Dabo has done and what it takes to climb that mountain.

Please 🙏 don't disgrace Tom Landry. He was a great coach and an even better person. Stick to your terrible troll posts after a Clemson basketball loss.

I have to agree. The university and boosters likely won’t put up with lack of championship production for much longer. See John Cooper.

I think he wins one tonight and then he will be like Mickelson after finally winning a major.
I don't like him or that program. Never will. But he's a good coach and he's got good coaches around him. And they've figured out how to build a roster there that will match the best SEC roster. The Big Slow no longer applies to OSU.

"Figured out how to build a roster that will match the SEC". Yep it took a real think tank to get to that eureka moment. I believe the out of the box idea was, "hey let's outbid the SEC schools for their players". Brilliant!

If he wins tonight it will not be because he is a great coach. Buying the most talented team would be the reason in spite of his coaching.

The fighting Irishes bout to show Ryan Day what ACC Speed is all about. Day will probably be an analyst on James Franklin’s staff next year.

Why would someone better than Dabo agree to make less money? It just doesn’t make any sense. I guess the AD at Ohio State just doesn’t see what others do in Day.
