Pumpers and Dumpers: 2023 Edition

It has been a long time since I did a P&D... but in light of the current state of the program (and fans), it sounds like it is time to dust it off. Here is what we are hearing from the extreme sides of the fan base.
Pumpers: 11 win season.. ACC Champs.. Orange bowl birth? Times are good! We are coming off our 12th straight 10+ win season and our 8th ACC title in that same time frame. You have two nattys sitting in the trophy case less than 7 years old... man we are on fire!!! Sure we missed the playoff the last two years but even Saban has missed it a few times. We have Cade, Ship, A. Williams and A Randall coming back on offense.. and Dabo said we have some defenders coming back next year too that most of you guys thought were leaving. All of these inexperienced coaches you guys are complaining about? Well they won the ACC and 11 games despite all of that.. and now they have experience.. they will only get better! I look for the sky to be the limit next season.. we are probably winning the next 5 nattys in a row and I hope you guys dont get mad when it happens! ALL IN!
Dumpers: Man did you see what a real team did to us Friday? Sure we can handle ourselves okay in the weak ACC but the moment we get in the big water... we drown. ND, SCar, Tenn... we couldnt handle anyone outside of our preschool playground. Streeter.. OMG.. he ruined DJ and no telling how bad Cade will be next season after a spring with him.. and as much as we love all our old players, we dont need them back here coaching until they've spent some time coaching FCS or G5.. had some success.... but no, Dabo would rather slip to 7-5 his way than keep winning like 2012 Dabo set out to do. And do you see FSU? They have the NIL and the portal rolling.. they will probably win 17-18 games next season... maybe even get invited to the Super Bowl by the NFL. I think they just gave one of their transfers a 6th star! We are in trouble. We will have no defense next year and the offense will continue to sputter when it matters most. Welcome back to the 2000s. It will be 1 step forward, 2 steps back until we wake up and get back to Clemson football again.

"An optimist is neither naive, nor blind to the facts. nor in denial of grim reality. An optimist believes in the optimal usage of ALL options available, no matter how limited. As such, an optimist always see the BIG picture. How else to keep track of all that's out there? An optimist is simply a PROACTIVE REALIST." -Vera Nazarian
the "PUMPERS" are blind to facts and in denial to grim reality...........the "DUMPERS" are NOT.

I think the difference is that the "Pumpers" believe we will

always be elite, and the occasional hiccup is just that, a temporary aberration.
The "Dumpers" must believe that the success was only brought on by a certain confluence of random events, and they know better than anyone what those events were, and why can't the rest of us listen to them when they constantly tell us what must be done to FIX THIS?
I consider myself neither Pumper nor Dumper, neither fish nor fowl. I am somewhere in the middle. Coach Swinney has had his first rounds of major success. Now, he must once again adapt to prove that, like Coach Saban, he can sustain that success over several rounds of players through his tenure. But, if we continue to measure Dabo Swinney only against Nick Saban, he will come up short. So will every other coach at every other school, at least right now. Like Highlander, there can be only ONE. (In this case, only ONE Number ONE coach.)
I do think that this coming season will be a pivotal one for Clemson. We won't be on the fence. We will either get better, or we will get much worse. I will be along for the ride, either way.

I hope we have a lot more people with faith that the best is yet to come! Gods system of sowing & reaping works no matter how you choose to do it.
Having faith & vision expecting the sky to fall will give you a harvest of fallen sky while having faith & vision that the best is yet to come will give you a harvest of the best is yet to come.
We either trust our coach to make great decisions or we don’t, either way it should be performance based.
It wouldn’t suprise me a bit if Dabo decides to go into ministry in a different way soon. He’s not going to build into a group that no one is happy with unless it’s perfection.
Many of the fan base have become like spoiled kids getting everything they want. Real Clemson fans do it with class win or lose.
That’s what makes these hills so special. We are so blessed as a program with a great culture, great recruiting, great kids & great coaches.
Counting our blessings & having gratitude brings more blessings while complaining & murmuring brings grief!
I can’t imagine living with some of you because your never satisfied or realistic, we all want another National Championship very soon too but us having an undefeated season every year isn’t realistic.
Can we win another National Championship this next season, yes we have the talent & great coaches but we as fans will have to be the best 12th man we can be too!

This is just an example of the two extremes. Most of us are somewhere in the middle of this, closer to one or the other.

I absolutely agree with the Biblical law of sowing and reaping.

And Dabo has sown some bad seeds the last few years, which is why I’ve become a “dumper.”
He has hired numerous coaches who were unqualified for their positions, which has led to players not being fully developed, game plans not expertly prepared, and proper in-game adjustments not made.
As a result, we often struggle with teams who are less talented but better coached.
He has refused to use the portal to address needs, which affects our depth.
Dabo is now reaping what he sowed, as evidenced by two straight years of underachieving.

I am sure we could have a very good team next year. .. but at several positions being what they are, don't hold your breath.

I admit I am definitely a pumper. I almost always see the good in the HC's and the programs and I readily admit I ignore some obvious negatives that sometimes rare their ugly heads even if they are true.

Most are not as extreme as the OP and I think poking fun at the extremes was his intent.
But it is a mindset. Some people look forward to the next good thing and downplay the negatives to get past them as quickly as possible. These people expect positive things to happen. Others focus on the worst case so much they miss the good things that do happen and generally expect the worst.
I also believe that much of the time you get what you expect.

@TattedCop and @Rhettfla I believe I would be considered to be in the same boat with you guys. I realize there are issues but fairly certain Dabo will be addressing those. Dabo has proven he can build a winner.

To me, it's humility vs. arrogance.
There really aren't many of us who are arrogant enough to believe that we know more than guys who have been playing and coaching football most of their lives, and have excelled at the highest possible level of the game. Not only that, they know more than the guys who see these players in practice every day and measure their performance and development regularly, and depend on their success for their livelihood.
It's only the Tnet geniuses who have all the answers and everyone else must be told loudly how right they are.

Your right. Coach Ford did not need more than six passes per game and he also needed a new athletic dorm even thought the NCAA had ruled that student athletes would not be housed together and would be dispersed among the general student population. And after watching Cade flounder around in the bowl and not hang in the pocket for another clothesline hit then it's unanimous that he needed to remain on the bench as DJ would have done a better job. He just was not ready and it was proven. As for their livelihood, the head coaches make more in a year than most can make in a lifetime. The assistants do have that concern. They say yes a lot - just like in any other business.

Not sure I understand your post but I think you’re making my point. So now you’re not only smarter at football than Dabo, but Danny as well. Ok.

Like most, I'm in the middle. If we can find a way to get both Drew and Clay on the field at the same time then I'm all in as a pumper. Will built the foundation and Clay will be the best of the three. Good times.

Hard not to notice that the pumpers section was normal and the dumpers was filled with hyperbole. Pretty easy to see where you are situated

Like I said. I am in the middle. Been following this thing since I met Frank Howard in the locker room at Fike Fieldhouse in the mid 60's. I was a minor sport coaches kid growing up and he would hold court in the sauna and regale all that were around with colorful stories. Sounds weird but there was nothing unusual about it. I met Herman the asst trainer at the same time and he would provide me with Gatorade and Vitamin C tablets and salt tablets if I needed them. It was fun hanging around the coaches and players back then and on into the 90's. Things changed a lot after that and it's just a business now to pay all that are involved ridiculous sums of money. So if the HC makes 11.5 million per year with a football budget that dwarfs all our competitors then yeah, I expect them to win most of their games. Not a pumper or dumper - just a long time fan.

Don't see any more Natties in the foreseeable future. With a 2-3 great recruiting classes that could change but with NIL I don't think it's realistic. Hard to see what's going to derail UGA, OSU, and Bama. If they throw enough money at it eventually the big spenders like USC, Texas, and A&M will stumble into a team. Not sure where that will leave Clemson.
