here's how I see the flag issue

Jun 22, 2015, 10:21 PM

the American flag flew over atrocities such as, the native american genocide, and the British flag flew over god knows how many atrocities, but do people yell to have them taken down? no, because it is all history, whether good, or bad, people need to understand that it happened and learn from it. will we ever see another holocaust? no. will we ever see Germany start another world war? no. will the south secede again? probably not. why? because we learn from our history.

Hmmm...here's a difference: The United States, Britain,

and Germany all are actual countries. South Carolina is an actual state. The Confederate flag represents nothing. It's dead. It's over. It has no place as a gov't symbol because it represents no government.

Fly it over your trailer--don't fly it over my statehouse.

It doesn't fly over your statehouse

Please get your facts straight

contrary to what CNN and a couple of other news outlets reported, the "flag" is NOT flying over the statehouse nor has it for about 15 years. It flies above a Civil War monument on the Capitol grounds.

Tht "flag" was never flown by any SC troops during the Civil War--to the best of my knowledge. It was placed above the Statehouse in the '50's/'60's during the Civil Rights protests throughout the South and the rest of the country. THAT'S the main reason it needs to consigned elsewhere---it really doesnt represent any SC history or heritage---plus the fact it offends a significant portion of the tax-paying citizenry

Yeah--I know. My bad. And I was there when it came down.

Got carried away. So I'll amend--I don't want it flying on my statehouse grounds.

I totally agree. This flag also represents so much more to this state. I hate to see people from other states, who don't understand our values, dictating the future of this flag.

Real talk

The State flew the flag on TOP of the Capitol right after the Civil Rights bill was passed. It was a giant middle finger. Let's not pretend it was actually setup as a memorial.

Ask yourself why the flag went up in the 60's...

Not much debate needed.

Well, maybe that.

Silly me thinking the reason was that people still live in countries called the United States, Great Britain, and such like.

Nazi Germsny and Imperialistic Japan

Both changed their flag after ww2

That all sounds great, but it can be learned through a text

Jun 24, 2015, 12:12 AM

book. If I took a child who knew nothing of the issue to the state's capital and told him to look at the Confederate flag, what would he tell me? What would he learn from a flag flying? That's what history books are for. That's what museums are for. I know there is no comparison between the two and I'm using an extreme example, but using your logic, should Germany fly the Nazi flag to remind people of their atrocities?
