Here for Nolan Turner Apologies

emoji_events [27]
Mar 17, 2022, 10:52 AM

I would like to make this thread available for anyone who wishes to apologize to Nolan Turner.

For 6 years he was labeled as being too unathletic to play at a school like Clemson and the weakest link in an otherwise athletic secondary.

Well.... he has posted a 37.5 inch vertical jump and a 4.4 40 yard dash at Pro Day this morning.

His vertical surpassed everyone else including Justyn Ross and Mario Goodrich.

All 40s have not yet been run for comparisons as of this posting.

Turner has now run a second 40 at 4.4 seconds.

He remains the fastest time of the day to this point.

Dear TigersO,

I thought it would never cease with the wise cracks from the TNet 'experts' about Nolan Turner being on the team 'only because Dabo was friends with Nolan's terribly ill father' ... and that 'Dabo was giving scholarships to players who should only be walk-ons' ... junk like that.

As with you, I don't remember the specific (and numerous) TNetters who posted this snarky stuff, but I darn sure remember reading it in the early days after Nolan Turner signed his LOI with us.

That shizz resurfaced occasionally prior to the 2020 season when our Safeties had a poor game, and when blame was (again) directed to Dabo for not having good back-up Safeties.

At least the TNet Snark-Patrol has the self-respect to hide and not show themselves since Nolan Turner had a terrific final 2 years with us, and is now cooking with 'clean burning propane' at the Pro Day.

GOOOOOOOOOO Tigers and GOOOOOOOOOOOO Nolan Turner!

I agree with you if you are referring to any useless, over the top bashing. There are those who act like you should be kicked off the team if you miss a tackle.

For those that were analytically critical of his body of work, I wouldn’t think there needs to be any apologies. I think we can all agree, a fast 40 time does not mean you will be a good football player. Turner had some fantastic moments and was a solid/consistent performer, but his body of work shows some significant gaps in transitioning to the next level. This is echoed in every scouting report available.

People actually said quite the opposite.

I'm paraphrasing but people essentially said, "he's a really smart player but he just isn't fast enough to keep up at this level".

You are indicating that he is athletic enough but isn't a good enough football player.

His pro day today tells us nothing about him when it comes to recognizing routes, working in his zone, or tackling.

We will see if he has an NFL career, but it won't be because he is too slow.

I can't remember a bunch of Tiger-netters attacking
Turner. I don't read every post so I'm not saying
that you haven't seen a few but this is overboard.

I'm not going to pretend that I will go back and prove it to you with previous posts, but almost every game in previous seasons where the other team had success passing there were loads of posts about Turner's athleticism or perceived lack of athleticism.

Some took direct shots plainly saying that he wasn't fast enough or quick enough to play at Clemson's level.

Some posters took a more backhanded approach of "poor Turner just isn't fast enough to keep up with WRs and the coaches should let some other guys take a shot at it" as though he was some charity case that the coaches were unjustly putting on the field to get embarrassed.

It appears more personal or maybe "rankist" because people didn't like his ranking out of high school.

Nobody on the boards ever accused Lawrence, Bresee, Allen or Taylor of being too slow or unathletic.

Anyone that is on TigerNet regularly can confirm your post.
I saw many references of how slow and out of place he was, others should be starting instead,, etc. I also saw posts declaring that the only reason he started was:
-He’s white
-He’s Dabo’s roommate/teammate’s son

And his roomate died so Dabo feels it more than usual.***

That is certainly a question that I can't answer.

Maybe they knew he was fast, but don't think his other attributes will warrant him being drafted.

I honestly don't know the criteria for how they choose the combine participants after they get past the top round projected prospects.

From the time he signed with us, people have complained about him. I remember the posts that cried “nepotism”, wasted scholarship, “sucks we’re so bad in the secondary that Nolan is a starter”, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Apologize for what? Truth is he has been training specifically for these drills since the end of the season and has his body prepared for these drills...Do not make the mistake in thinking that this will bump him up to 2nd or 3rd round because you will be disappointed.

He is most definitely athletic...He played Clemson football...You cant do that being a fckn square like Tigerbalm...He was awful against the run and was a complete liability in coverage...Come on

He was more than a tenth of a second faster than everyone else who ran at Clemson's Pro Day.

Is Turner the only one who knew it was coming and decided to train to run the 40, vertical jump and broad jump?

I only ask because he was at the top of the list for each of the 3 things that test for a player's speed and explosiveness.

Also, why in the world would I think that this would magically bump him to a 2nd or 3rd round pick?

My post wasn't about the NFL draft.

It was about the TNET posters who incorrectly took shots at Nolan Turner.
