John HEISMAN Deserves a Statue @ CLEMSON!

Greetings my TigerNetter Friends...let's do something highly special for our beloved Clemson!
Why don't we put a lot of our good minds & a little of our wallets on the line (to go along with our posting expertise of wishing for this or that to happen)..and do something as a collective group for Clemson Sports (Football)! What could we do as a group that loves Clemson so much, and make some neat history of our own for Clemson at the same time?
May I propose commissioning a sculptured statue of John Heisman (later maybe one of Frank Howard & Danny Ford)..and have it placed in prominence so others after us would see & learn about The Man/The Head Coach that got Clemson on the map in Southern Football circles..and who is still known today through that NYC trophy ceremony..and whose ideas, inventions & formations remain today.
Yes, we know..the school & athletic dept would have to approve of this, yada-yada-yada..but someone has to start the ball rolling, and we as a large group in scope & abilities could start this idea moving forward.
If you've been fortunate enough to have been on the lawns of Notre Dame and seen the huge bronze statues of Knut Rockne or The Gipper or Moses..or at Harvard, or at Yale, or at Bama (The Bear), or OHst (Jesse Owings)...then you've probably been impressed by their big tall bonze statues of their historical football personalities. Each time I've seen such a statue on a campus I've had a feeling that Clemson needed to have one planned, designed, made & installed for an important Football Head Coach at Clemson who primarily instilled our perceived attitude/make-up for being a physical, hard-nosed, running team bent on being winners.
His name was John HEISMAN..our 4th Football Head Coach..from 1900-03. He was called up from Auburn by our 1st FB HC Walter Riggs (ever seen the building named for him?) to do the job needed to make little ole Clemson College the dreaded scourge of the South in football..and he did, with best winning record ever (16-0-2 in league play for .944%; 19-3-2 overall for .833%).
Sidebar: Walter Riggs, a professor from Auburn was our 1st FB HC..in 1896 & 1899, with William Williams coaching in 1897 & John Penton in 1898. It was Riggs who called on Heisman to come up from Auburn and git er done!
With this said, I'd like to see a tall bronze statue (like one of Bear Bryant)..that would be placed prominently somewhere around the stadium..maybe even near new west entrance..with his Clemson history shown on base and which would not only be artistic, beautiful & neat But educational to fans, visitors & recruits..in essence saying: Clemson had a Heisman way before anyone else (but Auburn)!
If we can't have that Heisman player for now..let's take what we DID have and honor Coach Heisman, with a sculpture! And, I truly know that TNetters could carry the ball financially on an idea like this since we have a highly spirited & willing-to-give fan base. I'll donate a box of LED's & $1000 to the cause (if through monthly payments from my Social Security check)! LOL, but dead serious!
So, what do you as a group think about this? Would you be willing to help..through ideas, seeing what a sculpture of that magnitude would cost, who could do it locally, how to approach the Administrative & Athletic departments, maybe have a fund raiser for all Clemson Fans to participate, etc. WHAT SAY YOU?!
Congrats TiGER TEAM..keep winning!
PS: Winning % for other highly successful Clemson Head Coaches -
Pell: .804% overall; .875% conference Ford: .760% overall; .774% conference Hatfield: .707% overall; Dabo: .695% overall; .745% conference

Let's not stop there. Need one for Coach Howard who did a lot with a little for 30 years. And Danny for the NC. And leave space for Dabo. His will be coming.

I think it would be nice to have a statue of Heisman and Howard somewhere in a place of prominence. I wouldn't put one of Danny up yet, though he is certainly deserving. Putting up statues of people who are still living seems like a bad idea to me.

I would put up a statue of Frank Howard before anyone else.

Just my 2 cents but Heisman's left for Ga. Tech and his tenure as coach had no real lasting effect. The program really didn't regain stability till Josh Cody became coach in 1927 and then more improvement under Jess Nealy.
IMO its Frank Howard who deserves a statue more than anyone else.Coach Howard came to Clemson in 1931 and stayed for the rest of his life and he had that quality that the best Clemson coaches have which is that you would have never thought he had ties to any other university other than Clemson. He took Clemson College to heart and made it his own.
It's an understatement to say he did more with less.In 30 seasons as head coach he never had a losing decade and had 7 final top 20 teams. He went to 6 bowl games won 3 of them and was favored in none of them. He gave Clemson its first top ten team and its first Orange Bowl title .It was his vision that made Death Vally a reality. As athletic director he negotiated the first home and away series with Notre Dame. He always believed that Clemson could be top program and he pushed to make that reality happen.

HeLP!...Lawton Swann OR David Hood OR a Statue Sculptor! Let's

see what it'd take to start a fund raiser for a nice tall bronze statue of John Heisman! I figure it'd cost $100,000 at least for sculpture..which would cost each donor from TigerNet and/or general Clemson Fan Base about $10 each (assuming 10,000 donors came onboard).
Yes, I do believe Frank Howard deserves a statue tOO..but John Heisman really started and defined our early success..and letting the College Football World (via visitors as well as younger Clemson Fans) know visually that Clemson has some very unique history by having John Heisman at Clemson. Plus, the plaque would have some of the formations he invented (like the center snap, I believe).
Hey, even Georgia Southern has TWO nice large statues of ERK RUSSELL outside & inside their sweet little football stadium (I have pics taken last June while visiting)...and it's unreal how special it is to walk up to those two statues and read what he accomplished..with his/their motto of: "ONE MORE TIME"..in that they won 5 NC's!
BOYS & GIRLS...we can start the ball rolling on this, for it's a shame that our Athletic Dept or others haven't brought this matter up for serious discussion. AND, we do a lot of talking, dreaming for better days, want this-want that, etc. for our Football Team..but this project would be a chance to do more than talk and/or whine about how Clemson can be better! Let's see if Lawton Swann, David Hood or someone with pull can bring this matter up to those in power. AND, if Tigernet has a resident Sculptor or Statue Artist online..would you please comment on what it would take artistic wise, money wise & logistic wise to get this done! TIA.
What say you?!
Congrats TiGER TEAM...keep winning, and we'll do our part to help you, promote you, pull & yell for You!

Agree with the idea Bill but think Frank Howard may be the most deserving. As great as Heisman was, he just wasn't at Clemson but for a few years. Believe that Howard brought Clemson football to another level and we wouldn't be where we are today without him. Danny Ford did a lot too but I think it would be great to have a statue of Frank Howard near the hill entrance, near Howard's Rock! I hope you had a good time in Orlando watching our Tigers roll those OK boys!! What a game!
