Headlines are so misleading!!!!
May 4, 2017, 3:15 PM
|
|
With the mainstream Media they set the agenda and tell the story they like by creating the headlines. They know most people will not read the story and if some people do read many of them will not actually comprehend what they read. I expect better from Tigernet, yet this week I have read to articles where the headline was totally misleading. One the story about Ben Boulware, the headline made it seem like Ben was pitching a fit and being a jerk, I read the story and the exact opposite is what happened. Today I thought from the Headline that Coach Sweeney wanted death valley to be a dome. I read the story and that is not even close to what he said. Come on Tnet be honest with the headlines!

Hey @11965tiger® let me help you out a little bit.
First off, enclose, does not mean to put a dome on. Or a roof on. To most people, it means what the very first definition in the dictionary says....a. To surround on all sides; close in: a valley that is enclosed by rugged peaks. Also surround, circle, ring, girdle, encompass, encircle; confine, close in, shut in, corral, fence in, wall in, hedge in, hem in; literary gird, engirdle.
Hope that helps. I really can't imagine someone seeing that and thinking dome or roof, but whatever.
As for Boulware, the headline says he was upset. Not pissed off. Not ticked off. Not in a rage. Upset, as in hurt. His quote says of the Panthers taking the kicker.
"It hurt a little bit," Boulware said. "I'm sure he's a great player and a great kicker. I'm sure that was a need on their team. But I would have loved to have been that pick."
He then said, "It sucked," Boulware said of not being picked. "It was a long three days. I was by my phone the whole time waiting for a call and didn't get one. That (the call from Rivera) eased the pain a little bit. But honestly, I wish he'd called me a little earlier."
He was, wait for it, upset he wasn't picked.

"Upset?"
1. a state of being unhappy, disappointed, or worried. "domestic upsets" 2. an unexpected result or situation, especially in a sports competition.

Hey just realized it was you who responded to me. Very disappointed in you David. Instead of being so defensive and trying to belittle me you might have took a look at your headlines and what they imply instead of simply trying to make me look dumb. By the way I truly enjoy Tnet and your articles . Have a great day!

I have come to expect the snark and sarcasm. I agree with your point. The headlines were crafted to maximize clicks. Small comments taken out of context to sensationalize them. I would post dictionary definitions of "snark", "sarcasm", and "sensationalize", but that would be over the top.
Your post was constructive criticism, unlike many of the nasty attacks posted here daily.
To David's credit, at least he does not hide behind a handle that makes him anonymous. And I recognize that it is his job to generate clicks.
We are all Tigers. Can't we all just get along? Don't taze me, bro!

Wow your smart! Not much on reading Comphrension but you know how to use a dictionary. I give you that. Perhaps if you were not trying to make someone else look dumb and make your self look smart you may have understood I know exactly what both articles said and I am reacting to threads on Tnet reacting to headlIines. But as long as you feel better about yourself then ok.

I'll have to admit, when I read the Boulware headline, I thought the same thing. I was relieved after I read the entry. I was glad he gave credit to the other player. I thought what he said was fine. I know he was disappointed. I didn't see the one about the stadium.

Yeah, I kind of agreed with OP on both of these (semi-click-bait style) headlines and was a little surprised to see David's brash and defensive reply. Meh, maybe I'd feel the same way if it was my job and I felt I was being criticized.
(Gotta admit though, DH's tone has changed a bit on here in the last year...seems less humble/approachable than in the past.). ??

Yea that article probably could have a better headline but the other one...... A DOME? Are they serious? They read that headline and the first thing they thought was A DOME? Really?????? Enclosed = A DOME? Do they lower the enclosure on the convertible?

...and like others was relieved when I read the article. Ben was clearly disappointed but was honest about his feelings and not derogatory at all towards the other picks or the Panthers organization. But the headline "implied" otherwise in my opinion. I get why that's done for clicks. The other article about the stadium, didn't seem misleading at all to me. Nothing wrong with stating your thoughts on it though. Glad David responded but I also agree that it was a bit dismissive.

this thread...you called davidhood®'s journalistic integrity into question by claiming he used inaccurate headlines, and then got butthurt when David responded with definitions from a dictionary that prove the accuracy of said headlines?
What the actual #### did you expect for a response? And by the way, Dabo has been our coach since 2008 and has won a national championship...perhaps it's finally time for you to learn how to spell his last name.
If it's honesty you want I have plenty of it for you. The fact that you read David's headline and thought that Dabo wanted a dome is a you problem. Hth

Dude if the worst thing I ever do is misspell someone's name I will fell Great about myself. BTW I did not get butt hurt or offended in anyway. I also did not call out David Hood's integrity ( we are talking about sports) I merely stated what quite a few people on this board had observed and agreed with my observation. I would say if anybody was offended or butt hurt or anything it would be you and David. I think he over reacted! I also do not agree with his use of the word enclosed meaning only to surround which is basically how he used it. I guess my bigger point would be that the headline made me believe that the article was going to be about that or that Dabo had spent a lot of time discussing it and that was not the case once I read the article. The Boulware article I stick with my analysis that the headline was chosen to get people to read and lead many people to think that Ben had gotten mad and behaved poorly and that was not the case. Finally I will end this by saying why do people on here always call someone's fandom or fanship or whatever into question when they disagree on something? I may have done it myself and if so I was wrong and Apolgize. I also will say as I did earlier in the thread directly to David that I enjoy a nd appreciate his articles very much I was surprised he was so defensive but that's ok I will forget about it and move on as I am sure he already has. Go Tigers!!! Go Coach Swinney ( did I spell it right)

you accused davidhood® of being misleading and dishonest, but you weren't calling his journalistic integrity into question? Is calling someone dishonest not an attack on their integrity?
1965tiger® maybe it would be helpful if you could explain why a headline saying Ben was upset would lead you to believe that he behaved poorly and acted like a jerk. Do you behave poorly and act like a jerk every time you're upset? I know I don't, but I can't speak for you.
As to your last point, I'm not not sure where you're going with the "fandom or fanship" thing. Are you assuming that I called your "fandom or fanship" into question? How did I do that exactly?
And yes, you got butthurt, it's ok to admit it. You started off the thread with a subject line that ended with 4 exclamation points, just to let everyone know you mean business. You proceed to call David and tnet "misleading" and "dishonest." But when David replies with definitions of words you feel you were mislead by to explain his side, you think he's the one who was overreacting? I hope you will be able to see the irony in all of this, because it's there and it's palpable.

So Gwp You have responded 3 times to me on this thread. Heck I hardly ever post or comment and this one post has gotten far more attention than anything I have put on here recently. I stand by my original post especially with regards to the Boulware post. Even the second post my point although I may not have expressed as well As I would have liked to is that the headline made it sound that was what the article was about, the stadium and renovations and enclosing and then I read it and it was only one line. You may not always act like a jerk when you get upset but you are coming very close to it on this post. However I did acknowledge that I enjoyed David Hoods work even though I still think he over reacted. No big deal. So in the spirit of being a Tiger Fan. I forgive you for your attitude toward me. Have a great evening.
