Stewar Mandel's Mailbag comment on Death Valley's atmosphere

Stewart: I love the Mailbag, keep up the great work. I have had the chance to see games in some great environments like Madison, Ann Arbor, Neyland, etc. Since you were there in person, does Clemson deserve the hype all the commentators pour on during recent broadcasts? Is it worth the trip?
-- Robert G., Naples, Florida
I can’t speak for the average Clemson game, but Saturday night’s was a tremendous atmosphere from start to finish. Driving into that tiny little town, you start seeing the tailgaters seemingly miles from the stadium. The venue itself is picturesque, the fans are loud and of course, the anticipation leading up to the Clemson players running down the Hill is electric.
Is it worth the trip? Put it this way: I flew five hours from San Francisco to Atlanta, a two-hour drive from Clemson. By the time we got home from the game Saturday night they were setting up breakfast at the hotel. Then I got up and flew five hours back. So, yeah.
I would call attention to one oddity, though. After the game it’s tradition that fans are allowed on the field to celebrate and mill around. I’m sure it’s tamer after a run-of-the-mill game, but this one seemed dangerous. I saw one clearly inebriated woman injure herself trying to jump over a fence, and, later, watched an older gentleman get drilled in the face by someone trying to kick a field goal. This part of the festivities may need some work.

trying to kick a FG at what?

they drop the goalposts to the ground almost immediately. What would they be aiming at?
Odd that he labeled the field-run "dangerous" yet the only injury he saw was a drunk injuring herself and a guy getting hit by kids kicking a football.

To us it's a tradition. That's why he doesn't get it.

My friends daughter (Clemson student) was literally trampled on the hill at the end of the game. She was bruised up good and had to be treated by EMS - not the only one.

I think the postgame on-field activities after games

like this are an exception anywhere. The only difference is we are expecting people on the field after the game and have at least some measures in place to deal with it, where other schools, it's not so expected and therefore potentially much more dangerous.
I've always thought that getting on the field after a game is one of the great Clemson football traditions, and one that not nearly enough of the national press know about. We'll beat SC State or someone and they'll talk about "fans rushing the field." It's what we always do and one of my favorite memories of Clemson football when I was a kid. Nothing like being a kid on that field, in the middle of that giant stadium, and looking up to those monstrous (to a child) football players.

people go on the field after every game

it only appears to be rushing when we get an exciting win and people hurry down. After basic wins of SC State people go on to the field slower but there are always still some kids or college students who run onto the field as soon as the clock hits 0:00

I'm more concerned about uneven sidewalks ...

Several years ago while preparing for a night game, I was walking between the Esso Club and TTT. Earlier I had a few shots of "white lightning" at a tailgate. Well, while looking at some local attractions, I tripped over a sidewalk crack that had been pushed up by a tree. I stumbled forward a few steps before catching myself on my hands - got a little scrap on my right hand.
I'm pretty sure had I not had the hits of moonshine, my reaction time might have been slower and could have hit my face on the concrete. Close call.

We used to take cardboard and slide down the Hill. My brothers and I would always rush the field after a Clemson game and ask players for their chinstraps. At least one player would give me his chinstrap. It was magic for an 9 year old boy.
Go Tigers!
