It’s exciting to contemplate the potential.

8

Mar 28, 2023, 10:25 AM

Our offense had gotten very stale over the past few seasons.

All this still has to materialized on the field, but the personnel is there and the possibilities are huge.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The stats related to his scoring points improvements is surreal..

and just what the Doctor ordered (aka Dabo) for a sick O!

One question

1
2

Mar 28, 2023, 11:02 AM

I'm not sure I understand the top ranking, though? Can y'all help?

Honest question, really good record & some really good stats, but #1 seems maybe a little bit odd, no?

I think it may make more sense after this year, & make no mistake I'm absolutely thrilled to see what he does here this year & hopefully at least another one (or two!), but his stats & results seem like #1 for NOW is favorable, no?

Again, don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing with the choice to hire him, not even a little bit.
Part of me LIKES the climb from even #2, though, and while it seems like many of the best OC's are all getting head coaching jobs lately like Riley's brother got (& like Riley himself has been explicit about looking for) & maybe that's why?

To your point RC Tiger, it didn't help snag any big recruits since (albeit the timing for hiring in January is problematic by nature), but IF we take transfers finally, this spring will be a bit of a hotbed for him to show off what he can do as a top-rated OC & recruiter.

Hopefully we let him give it a shot, but if not, I get it; it's still Dabo's call I guess, but I'm legitimately excited to see IF we can get some big transfers when the spring game creates a deluge of talent looking for new homes to excel at on offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Combination of ..........

4

Mar 28, 2023, 11:14 AM

the rate of improvement compared to prior years and the talent he had to work with compared to other "blue blood" talent rich schools. I agree with you on the transfer front.....especially as it pertains to WR, but that's an area where Dabo hasn't utilized from an impact player standpoint............and I don't see him doing it moving forward.

Klubnik and Riley can and will help overcome our talent deficiencies at WR, but how much?..........time will tell.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good info

Mar 28, 2023, 12:02 PM

Agreed, for sure.

I had someone tell me we lost countless recruits because of Streeter & that's why Riley was so crucial, but at the time off the top of my head I couldn't come up with any we lost explicitly because of Streeter, while Riley hasn't recruited at a top-shelf level (& obviously not here yet) regardless of potential & in spite of us (likely) not taking transfers by our own nature here under Coach Swinney.

The #1 ranking is exciting, I can't lie. I should just accept it I suppose, so that's what I'll work on. The future's so bright.

Re: One question

Mar 28, 2023, 3:02 PM [ in reply to One question ]

Transfers? Coach Riley will not be in charge of deciding to use the portal. That is Dabo's call. If Dabo gives the go ahead, then Coach Riley will get them if we can compete with NIL. If NIL is the deciding factor, we "ain't" gettin' 'em, no matter who the OC is.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg2013_nascar_champ.gif2014_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed

1

Mar 28, 2023, 3:36 PM

To be clear, I like Coach Swinney's leadership including his deliberate choice to not take transfers & why.

I admit it's personal (& I'll also admit I'm curious about transfers more than something I wouldn't see as an advantage for Clemson outright), but this is about being the top-rated offensive coordinator in the entire sport.

A big part of that is recruiting by nature, just as there will be a ton of talent looking for new homes this very month by the same nature. I have no problem with missing out on transfers personally, but I'm also curious to see what Riley can do, so to speak, & who his first "big get" for his career will end up being.

Re: Agreed

Mar 29, 2023, 10:49 AM

none of this makes any sense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Whether or not its accurate its all about marketing

1

Mar 28, 2023, 3:45 PM [ in reply to One question ]

Was chad morris the best OC? nope. But he paved the way for our National Championships by getting Deshaun Watson and subsequently probably Trevor. Without Chad Morris Deshaun was going to be a Bulldog or a Gator. So this is a great hire in terms of recruiting. Similar how Venables was for our Defense. WE couldn't ask for much more in terms of another OC. He is top shelf in terms of marketing and recruiting. I look forward to seeing the difference on the field. It has been a long time since we've had competency from our offense.

We got this

2

Mar 28, 2023, 10:58 AM

We may have nearly made the playoff last year, but oddly still have nowhere to go but up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We got this

Mar 29, 2023, 10:56 AM

Dabo would be a fool -- first rate, gold plated -- to even consider Alabama. Now if ou think our coach is a fool, go ahead and argue.

The acid test: do you for one minute think Alabama would tolerate his style, and if so thouh the answer is no, would they give him time? Ha ha ha add infinitum. And finally would Dabo even ponder it. Even an Alabama graduate would laugh at that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope he hangs around for at least two years. If he is

2

Mar 28, 2023, 12:07 PM

TRULY smart, he will take at least two years, and try to absorb as much knowledge as he can about how to run a Natty winning program. I don't think he will pull a Chad Morris, and jump at the very first opportunity. He probably already had Head Coaching offers after last season. Hopefully he will do like Brent Venables did, and it will have to be a very special offer to pry him away from Clemson once he falls in love with the upstate.

Don't think he'll be here nearly as long as BV

Mar 28, 2023, 1:51 PM

Now that you mention it, & while I agree with you on Riley not staying for a decade by nature, just the idea of him being hear nearly as long as BV is exciting to say the least.

Re: BV was a true blessing

Garrett won't be at Clemson past the 3 year mark before he gets a HC offer at one of the big power 5 schools. And I'm thinking that it will probably be Florida if Billy Napier falls flat on his face there....

I hope you're right

1

Mar 28, 2023, 1:02 PM [ in reply to I hope he hangs around for at least two years. If he is ]

Just be prepared is all.

A lot of people are already promoting him as the next Clemson head coach, for example, & I just don't want people to get their hopes up more than ENJOY the time we'll have with him for whatever part he serves of his 3-year contract.

He's been explicit (& often) about seeking a head coaching job, & his contract was written just as explicitly to make it favorable to US if he leaves early; we're paying Streeter more to coach at Georgia this year than we're paying Riley, but the buyout clause for Riley makes it both attractive for other programs to hire him as a head coach and good for us if we instead fire him if, God forbid, we don't make the playoff this year (I expect we absolutely will, just saying the contract works for everyone).

If he does take us to top ranks this year, for example, we may only get him for two seasons by nature, possibly even less for the right team/offer, but for now I think two years is a good sweet spot, particularly with Cade's tenure (Riley grew close with him back in Texas) & future scheduling along with coaching opportunities at bigger programs being more likely to develop in 2024/2025.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I hope you're right

Mar 28, 2023, 3:06 PM

If he were to leave after this this year and he and Cade are a team, Cade may leave with him rather than stay w/Grishman, the new OC.

Re: I hope you're right

Grisham is even less qualified as OC than Streeter was. There would be a full-on revolt and transfers galore if that happened. No sir.

Here Here, a thought as crazy as Tyler Grisham promoted to OC would have never crossed my mind bc it would be the worst move that Dabo had ever made!!!

Re: I hope you're right

1

Mar 29, 2023, 11:52 AM [ in reply to Re: I hope you're right ]

Dabo wouldn't promote Tyler Grisham as OC, he isn't even close to being a top WR's coach!!! But if Dabo was to do what I've never believed he would do, and that's take the HC job at Bama, and then Garrett would probably be the next HC at Clemson. With Dabo never letting it leak what he's about to do next, it's no more than guessing that he could have fired a dear friend to make sure that Clemson would be OK with Garrett if he has plans of going back to Bamma, just a wild guess!!!

Re: I hope you're right

Stop showing your ignorance for the love of God Almighty, just stop.

Dabo has never said one word about wanting to go back to Bama or Bamma as you say.
Also, I am a friend of a friend of Grisham and you are again clueless. He's not going to be an OC at Clemson any time soon, but he's clearly not a buffoon and you clowns make him out to be. He's a good guy, according to my friend who played with him, and he's a good coach and recruiter. You people and your venom are just throwing crap out there hoping it will stick. You remind me of coots and Aggys with nothing but hate as your guide. It's sickening and disgusting and I honestly will feel better if you down vote me. Wow. You, personally, have been on my nerves for months with your hateful words and venomous attacks of all things Clemson. Clemson is only my second favorite team in the country, but I am clearly more open minded and more informed than the lot of you hate filled hating hater sons of biscuit hating mother f'era on the #### planet
So sick and tired of you I might even do you a favor and leave

Mar 28, 2023, 3:20 PM

Seriously? Based on what? Don't get me wrong, I am pulling for the man and for your team. But, he didn't earn that based on TCU's offense this past year.
If he was the top OC in the land, then our DC must be the best in the land, also because we shut them down almost completely other than a stupid terrible roughing the punter call that changed the momentum. Call me names or watch the #### tape. The punter was never touched and look at before and after.

I hope he and Klubnik team up and are number one in the nation and he earns this hype, but right now it's looking rather froggy/fishy

Re: TNET: Garrett Riley ranked No. 1 offensive coordinator in college football

The talent difference between UGA and TCU was huge. No OC could have overcome that. You have to look at the total season to see what he did with the talent he had.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Garrett Riley ranked No. 1 offensive coordinator in college football

Mar 29, 2023, 10:00 AM

Right and I am doing that and from many games because they are less than two hours from my house. I hate them, but I watched them because I watch everyone.
Like I've said, we shut them down and we weren't that good. We kind of shut down Bama, too, and got hosed in both of those games by refs even the LA. and other non biased crazy media said that as well.

I'm basing it on that. He took over a team that wasn't his the previous season and I will give him that. But, he also had a lot of seniors including an annoying 5th year senior at QB who brought them back from games they really should have lost multiple times. By my viewing, they could have just as easily lost as many as 5 games last year and that wasn't a playoff team by any means.

That wasn't all on him, for sure and again for your sake I hope I'm wrong. But, the media is obsessed with OU and Lincoln Riley. Any QB no matter how average is automatically a Heisman leader at OU. Sure, they aren't my favorite team but I don't post just to be an ###, i try to be fair minded even with teams I don't like and I don't like several schools that always get the breaks and the Frogs were one of those last year.
Any offensive coach named Riley is just going to have favor on them in the media.

Just saying as a warning don't believe everything you read and hopefully they are right this case because they often aren't

I'm on your side. Peace

Mar 29, 2023, 12:05 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Garrett Riley ranked No. 1 offensive coordinator in college football ]

I watched a cple of TCU whole games, and Garret made some great calls in those games, one was the OU game, and the other was in the Mich game, two games where he was almost out talented almost player to player. No doubt in my mind that Garrett is the real deal at what he does, and I believe he would be a saucerful HC with a few years at a school like a Clemson!!!

I stated when we hired Riley our WR recruiting would take off as a result. We see that happening right now. This board is flush with WR recruiting news. I think he's created a stir out there and playmakers are lining up. He and Dabo need to get in those homes and close the deal. It's happening folks. Exciting football is back in Clemson ! Let's Go !

Having the #1 OC in the country and Dabo as a head coach

Mar 29, 2023, 2:10 PM

should result in us shaking off the recent slip we’ve had in the skills position recruiting. How does a WR not want to play for this program? Especially since the QB recruiting has remained very strong.
