closer than most would believe. If the Hokies can play solid defense, it could be a low scoring game. And in low scoring games one turnover can make all the difference.
I would love for a middle-of-the-road ACC team to knock of the SEC big bad monster team to open this season.
Would definitely make for an EspiN meltdown

I think VT's defense will probably keep them in the game for a while. I just don't see any reason to think that VT improves on their horrific offense from last year.

The only reason to be optimistic about VT is that we fired or demoted the three biggest reasons why our offense has sucked for 10+ years. Bryan Stinespring was demoted from OC to TE coach, and Curt Newsome (OL coach) and Mike O'Cain (QB coach & playcaller) were fired. It's hard to say how much things will improve this year, but many Hokie fans are cautiously optimistic based on what we've seen & heard so far. Unfortunately, it's going to take awhile to repair the damage, and so we're probably not much better than an 8-4 team this year.
As for the opener, I think we keep it close based on the strength of the defense for 2-3 quarters, but 'bama wins it going away, to the tune of 38-17 or something like that.

Alabama has a fantastic way of planning for their next game. Their staff does an excellent job of breaking down tape and finding holes in the oppositions game. It happens every opening game as well as every bowl game.
It reminds me of when Pete Carrol was at USC. His staff was one of the best at prepin for a bowl game and they were almost unbeatable in the post season.
The QB position is the biggest role in CFB. Bama has McCarron (30TDs, 3Ints). Logan Thomas is VTs guy and he is horrible; thats being polite. They won't win until he is gone. VaTech has zero chance against Bama with him at the helm. I will laugh on draft day at the ignorant team who gives him a chance.

VT's only hope is to catch Bama looking ahead. they have made it no secret that they are focused on Game #2 against A&M @ Kyle Field. They have a bye on Sept 7th, but they're still going all out right now for the Sept 14th game. ...which is very un-Saban-like.

Virginia Tech will probably keep it close for a quarter or two thanks to the defense but the final score won't be that close in my opinion. Alabama really doesn't have any holes and a middle of the road team like VT would need a lot to go their way to pull an upset like that.

this game is important because it part of the ACC-SEC opening trifecta. Last year, we went 0-3 in the season ending trifecta which really hurt the ACC. fortunately, the win over LSU stopped the bleeding (at least on our part).
VT will be the biggest underdog of the weekend, so their upset would be huge. But we need to focus on our game because we're the only one favored so we provide best opportunity to prevent getting skunked 0-3 again.
